Arab call to protect mosque on Israeli anniversary

JERUSALEM -- Israel's Islamic Movement on Thursday called on Muslims to flock to Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque compound after police authorized a small group of Orthodox Jews to visit the disputed esplanade.

"We call on the Arab population [inside Israel] and our brothers in Jerusalem to go to the Al Aqsa mosque this morning," the group said.

The appeal came after Israeli police authorized extreme rightwing Jews to visit the compound to commemorate the 39th anniversary, according to the Hebrew calendar, of Israel's capture of east Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War.

The compound, which also shelters the Dome of the Rock, is Islam's third holiest site and is revered by Jews as the Temple Mount, their holiest relic.

"Like each year, a small group of visitors has been authorized to visit the Temple Mount," a police spokesman said. "But these people will not be able to pray and will be flanked by police officers during their visit," the spokesman added.

Around 2,000 policemen will be deployed to safeguard security as Israel celebrates what it terms the "reunification" of the holy city on the so-called Jerusalem Day.

Last year police fired stun grenades when hundreds of Palestinian stone-throwers attacked Jews who visited the mosque compound.

Thousands of people were due to take part in ceremonies and parades to mark 39 years since Israel wrested East Jerusalem from Jordanian control during the Arab-Israeli war on June 7, 1967.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who was returning from his first visit to Washington as leader, was to give a speech at the main commemorative event on the strategic Ammunition Hill, captured by Israeli paratroopers in the war.

After the ceasefire Israel annexed the Arab quarter of the city in a move not recognized by the international community.

On July 30, 1980, parliament passed a bill declaring Jerusalem the "unified and eternal capital" of the state of Israel. The Palestinians are determined to make East Jerusalem the capital of their promised state.

So it doesn't bother them when their fellow Muslims blow them up, but god forbid a Jew should visit one.

Keep the Jews off the Temple Mount, then use a single artillery shell to remove the Al Aksa(the farthest mosque) to the farthest place. Allahu fubar!

This just blows my mind. Jews and Christians unable to pray on the Temple mount, treated like criminals. This won't go on forever.

Update. Threats work.

Police Reverse Stand, Ban Jews from Temple Mount
18:33 May 25, '06 / 27 Iyar 5766

(IsraelNN.com) Police authorities have reversed their stand and prohibited a group of Jews from visiting the Temple Mount Thursday, Jerusalem Reunification Day, because of fears of violence.

The police originally said that the group of the Temple Faithful could visit the holy site without its leader, Gershon Solomon. Authorities later denied the entire group access after Moslem leaders called on Arabs to swarm the Temple Mount in protest.
