THE BRAVEST PRESIDENT
This guy is good.
By Michael Novak

. . . But I do not want to argue here the question of his greatness (I have heard voices call him the worst ever) because the question of ranking is above my pay grade and my foresight.

What I do want to argue is that, after Washington and Lincoln, Bush is the bravest of our presidents. He has faced the most intense fire, hatred, contempt, heavily moneyed and bitterly acidic partisan opposition, underhandedness, betrayal, of any president in the last hundred years. He has faced hostility over a longer time, in possibly the most dangerous period of international warfare in our national history. He has remained constant, firm, decided, and generous (to a fault) with his opponents.

He has faced almost unbroken contempt from the academy, from the mainstream press, from Democratic elites, from Moveon and all the other holders of the Democratic-party purse strings, from the Democratic Congress, from his treacherous (if not treasonous) Central Intelligence Agency, and from many levels of the permanent State Department. Almost every day, he has been pummeled and undermined by powerful forces of American power. Still, he has stayed firm, with clear arguments, and an even clearer vision.

On the number-one issue facing the nation—the war declared upon us by fascists who pretend to be religious—he has not wavered, he has not bent, he has stayed on course and true.

I RECOMMEND THAT YOU PRINT THE AFORE-LINKED ARTICLE AND SAVE IT WITH LAST NIGHT'S MUST READ FROM THE ANCHORESS:

". . . I was surprised, and what surprised me was the sense I had that Bush’s heart was broken. That he had done everything he could to keep faith with the nation, and that he could not believe that in a time of such terrible need, all some people could think of was, “how do we use this politically, how do we break Bush with this?” It can’t have helped that some of the hysteria was coming from the right as well as the left. Things changed after that, didn’t they? The press and the left doubled up their attacks, the far-right went very smug, and President Bush never has seemed to have regrouped his spirit."

IT'S ALL (PRESIDENT) BUSH'S FAULT . . .

HEARD THE GOOD NEWS?
By Michael Barone

Things are better than you think. Yes, I know, most Americans are in a sour mood these days, convinced that the struggle in Iraq is an endless cycle of bloodshed, certain that our economy is in dismal shape, lamenting that the nation and the world are off on the wrong track. That's what polls tell us. But if we look at some other numbers, we'll find that we are living not in the worst of times but in something much closer to the best. What do I mean?

REVISIONIST HISTORY
Antiwar myths about Iraq, debunked.
BY PETER WEHNER

Iraqis can participate in three historic elections, pass the most liberal constitution in the Arab world, and form a unity government despite terrorist attacks and provocations. Yet for some critics of the president, these are minor matters. Like swallows to Capistrano, they keep returning to the same allegations--the president misled the country in order to justify the Iraq war; his administration pressured intelligence agencies to bias their judgments; Saddam Hussein turned out to be no threat since he didn't possess weapons of mass destruction; and helping democracy take root in the Middle East was a postwar rationalization. The problem with these charges is that they are false and can be shown to be so--and yet people continue to believe, and spread, them. Let me examine each in turn:

DEFEATING TERROR
DESPITE THE POLS, WE'RE WINNING
By Ralph Peters

May 23, 2006 -- WITH the formation of Iraq's new government, it's a good time to take stock of where we stand in our confrontation with Islamist terror. You wouldn't know it from the outrageously dishonest headlines, but we're winning.

I guess it must be in the blood. I'm sure all those ancestors would have been proud.

Wow, I have not seen one of those. I occasionally coordinate weddings. I'll have to put that in my "so you want to do something different" file.

Maybe it's already a trend—but I could get it started in my neck of the woods.

He is the best press secretary that anyone could have! He has made all FReepers proud!

I did not think that Tony Snow would do the fantastic job he has done as press secretary. Tony as far as talk radio is concerned was never in the league of a Rush. He always seemed like too nice a guy to play hardball. But Tony has turned out to be the best ever press secretary.

Boy!!! Was I ever wrong!!!!!!

What is interesting is the press is apparently not as tough to handle was the typical talk show call in guest.

Tony treats the press corp like they were not very skilled callers on a talk show. He will not let them speechify and make attacks on the president. He smiles his nicest smile than then talks over top of them. Plus the government audio engineer always rides Tony's gain higher than the media person. Plus the mike the media person is on is not as full response and high fidelity as Tony's.

The Bush administration has stacked the audio and video deck on the media... bout time. They must be really ticked.

There is no way a reporter can win a shouting match. They just get their mike turned down.

Snow is so smooth likeable, and pleasant as he stuffs it to the media, that they must be wetting their pants to figure out how to retake control.

I think the media has about as much chance of taking control of the show, as a caller on Rush Limbaugh has of taking control.

Tony seems to be saying very nicely to the media.. "I am the star.. and you are not."

I think it just like the the old radio rule, and the media is learning they can't win as long as Tony controls the mikes and video.

This might just be the best time for Tony. Everyone knows, after his radio show, that he isn't just a blind partisan. And that he knows what information we need to have, and what we don't.
There's a level of trust that even Tony might not have been able to get earlier. And I am confident that he won't squander that.
