More than revenge needed

If you are one who believes returning control of the House to the Democrats this fall would bring some civility back to Capitol Hill, perhaps you should reassess your thinking. From every indication the venomous partisanship would not only not disappear but increase in ferocity, at least for the next two years.

House Democratic leaders have practically assured us of that as their prospects have soared, promising a series of investigations into President Bush's handling of everything from the conduct of the two wars, terrorism and Iraq, to formulation of energy policy. One senior Democrat, the seemingly perpetually angry John Conyers of Michigan who would head the House Judiciary Committee after a Democratic victory, is even openly talking about hearings to impeach the president.

More disturbing is the rhetoric of House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, whose tenure as the first woman to hold the post has included a daily spewing of vitriol at the White House and her counterparts in the GOP. Should the Democratic Party win in November, the San Francisco representative would be expected to become the first woman elected speaker, a position third in the line of presidential succession.

In announcing plans for a return to power, a confident Mrs. Pelosi promised a series of inquiries but reportedly denied there was a plan to impeach Mr. Bush as Republicans have charged. Or did she really? In fact, she said in reply to the impeachment question, that one never knows where these investigations might lead, leaving little doubt this is just what is in the back of her mind.

True. Somehow they think that they are absolved of the sins of Speaker Pelosi because they didn't vote. A 'no' vote is the same as a vote for Democrats. We can take our rage out on our own party in the primaries. When it comes time in November, like it or not we all have to step up and pull the lever for the GOP. Now, we can tell the pollsters we didn't but thats just cuz its fun to screw with their heads some more.

"If you are one who believes returning control of the House to the Democrats this fall would bring some civility back to Capitol Hill,"

I don't know of anyone who is stupid enough to have suggested this. Then again, I really don't care how "civil" Capitol Hill is as long as the Members do their job. The more "civil" Senate clearly is not doing it's job.

So tell them [the public]. But tell them about how to solve their problems at home and end a war and eliminate dependency on foreign oil. They don't want to hear about disruptive investigations into things that can't be changed. They are angry about a lot of things, including the anger in politics.

Nailed it!

Do you think you're absolved of the sins of Specter or Chaffee because "we all have to step up and pull the lever for the GOP"?

There are only 22 House Republican seats that have been listed as competitive and 12 Democrat seats and from what I saw last week over 10 of the Republican seats are low risk to being lost with only 5 in the extreme danger. I'm hearing a lot of noise but no real movement. Even the border issue is becoming a farce because all sides have really overplayed their hands and exaggerated their positions (fire away). The war in Iraq is really settling down and it appears we are on the right track. Gas prices will fluctuate for a while but by Aug should start to go down as summer travel slows down. The NSA whatever is exactly that to most people, whatever. Valerie Plame will probably pose in Playboy to get some more publicity for her book but no one will be buying for the article. The Rats have nothing to offer and even though they get a little momentum they lose it twice as fast.

The basic reality is that we need to either eliminate the dem party or split the country up. The thing we need more than anything else is runoff elections, so that it would become at least theoretically possible for some third party to rise up and surplant the dems.

"venomous partisanship would not only not disappear but increase in ferocity, at least for the next two years."

You don't get it, Venomous partisanship is what we want.

Bush when elected promised to reach his hand across the isle to the Democrats, to end partisanship, and we have the biggest spending large government president we have ever had.

We didn't elect Republicans to be non partisan, I hope they "get a clue". Until they do, I'm going third party. Oh, and save your preaching about president Hillary, tell that to RINO Bush.

But I have no leverage over Speaker Pelosi. Specter or Chafee can be punished within their own party. Specter could be stripped of the precious chairmanship which was erroneously and stupidly granted him. But if Nancy Pelosi is the Speaker, whether you agree with her or not the sins are going to be committed. And she won't have to give a damn whether you like it or not since you can't vote for her and she knows you never would.

Now, we both probably agree with the current GOP leadership (especially in the Senate) is barely better than the DNC at the moment. But that is only because we don't have a DNC controlled Congress to compare it to. One year with a Speaker Pelosi or Majority Leader Reid would force us all to 'get religion'. There doesn't seem to be a logical reason to allow them to gain control just so we can learn the lesson. Better would be to torture these RINOs in the GOP primaries and replace them wherever possible.
