Generic ballot will always favor Dems/Liberals, because they run on dreams, fantasies, and empty promises. Republicans are more honest about reality. For this reason, the generic ballot testing the popularity of a "generic Democrat" against an actual Republican candidate is equivalent to this:

"Which do you prefer, Joe Blandguy, or someone who says you can have free health care, free school, free food, and free housing; who is for easy bankruptcy laws so you can walk away from your debts, who is for letting you file a lawsuit for huge amounts of money against anyone who annoys you, and who is for getting some rich guy to pay for all this... who do you like more in next November's election?"

The real reason that this poll is meaningless is due to our old friend: Jerry Mander.

95% of the people polled live in areas where I can guarantee you today who will be their representative after the 2006 election. I don't need no stink'n poll.

"Average voters can and do defect to the other party, and they almost always defect to the party of their incumbent."

This is the nut, and this is why the GOP will gain one seat at least in the Senate and one to five in the House.
