Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

You have NO idea how much your SoCal, San Diego perspective means to us MidWesterners who care very deeply about having this conversation.

These guys swarm and hijack and, as you so well observed, TAKE AWAY THE SERIOUS DISCUSSION OF THIS ISSUE.

It is literally impossible to have a rational debate about illegal immigration and the enormous problems it is causing because of their hijacking technique on EVERY STINKING THREAD.

That's what makes me think that at least half of this gang is made up of DU trolls. It's too insidious for it all to be cranky conservatives. There aren't as many of them in the world as there are on this forum.

We are under siege from the left folks.............don't kid yourselves....

I don't know of any hard core republican who are "fleeing" or even considering voting democrat.

THis is just a story to try and convince the faithful from not voting.

This is the DNC answer to the MASSIVE failure of their paid turn out to overcome the voluntary republican turnout.

Among total viewers, Hume had 1,202,000 and Dobbs had 810,000.

Dobbs is still 400,000 viewers behind. How is that close?

And you can blame most of the problems on the greedy commie unions.

The unions were the downfall of the U.K. and the same is happening here.

I saw the document too. And, frankly, I'd believe our Border Patrol over the Mexican government any day.

You said what I've been thinking all day and I'm sure other are seeing the irony of it as well.

I would too but that's not the point. The point is how did the Mexican government get private info known only to Friends of the Border Patrol and the BP? I know it could have been an informer, but I knew all of the core members quite well.

It is a lot cheaper to build the fence than for San Diego taxpayers to keep funding the illegals.
For those who have committed murder, drug runners, robbery,
etc, it cost San Diego tax payers over 50 million dollars a year to lock up these illegals.
Another mega millions a yr for their health care, another mega millions a year for education, etc, etc.
I watched in person over 50,000 of these illegals with their che t shirts, Mexican flags march down the street.
The other week over 800 of them rioted one evening and had to be put down.
The drug cartels, the kidnapping, the corruption in the Mexican gov. is beyond belief.

But it is the point. Either I believe our Border Patrol when they say that they don't give out that information. Or I believe the corrupt Mexican government that they got that information from our Border Patrol. I don't know where the info came from but I don't trust the Mexican government AT ALL.

all these 'Doom and Gloomers' who've suddenly come out of the woodwork and believe the first piece of propaganda they read (or most likely just the headlines)are doing their utmost to make sure the WH, House and Senate end up in the hands of Hitlery, Pelosi, Reid, Dean etc.,

Hi, AmeriBrit.

I think we need to start realizing that many of these poster are rat sleepers, implanted some time ago to strike now.

Obviously, they aren't bothered with the facts.

It may be split about half and half: Half commie sleepers and half people who don't confuse themselves with facts, but like banty roosters, are all puffed up with their self importance and a huge misconception of their power. It makes them feel they count for something while they fall for anything - like rat/MSM propaganda

The President's amnesty(temporary worker program) would be impossible to monitor. And the very far left has already taken conttrol of these people for their own purposes, with no objection from the government. I don't understand how 31 percent of the people think GWB is doing a good job, when he absolutely has a closed mind to what the US people demand. Sorry, I don't believe a word the man utters on this subject.

You're wrong.

This issue has the grassroots across the country inflamed. FR is just one expression of that fact.

So much so that even local and state candidates are having to field as many immigration-based questions and comments as they are anything else. It's remarkable.
