For a snack, air-popped popcorn with butter, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and a little onion powder.

For a pseudo-meal, a cheese sandwich with mayo, mustard, and ketchup on it.

For dinner when Xena's Guy is out of town (such as next week), Welsh rarebit. :)

Sad to say that the Math Teacher within me has finally made me give up potato chips. I had to do it before the 25-cent bag of chips disappeared for good. And it's already starting to happen.

Here's my story. You may want to scroll downward now.
Still there. Okay, then.

In the not-so-distant past, about 6 years ago or so, potato chip bags were very proportional, whichever of the major brands you bought. A 25-cent bag has 1 ounce, 50-cent got you 2, a buck 4, a buck-fifty 6. The best deal was when the supermarkets put the big bags on sale for $.79 or $.99.

Then they started shrinking the bags by half an ounce from each size EXCEPT the quarter bag. There's a reason for this. People won't buy bags with less than an ounce in them. It probably costs them too much to make them as well. They've tried this before back in 1980, when I was in high school, back when bags were 10 and 25 cents. They raised the dime bag to 15 and finally 20, which was silly, so they discontinued it. Well, folks, at 7/8 of an ounce, the 25 cent bag is at the size of the old dime bag that finally went away. So this one is going soon, too.

Where does the math come in? For the last four years, I've told every student that I saw with a .50-cent bag that he was wasting money. Not by buying junk food, but by buying the WRONG SIZE junk food. Two small bags was a better bargain than one bigger bag.

But that's all okay. I'm waiting for the big bags to make it down to 4 ounces. More than that and I really pay for it the next day.

See. Told you that you should have scrolled down.
And don't get me started on how I paid 50 cents for a slice of pizza in high school, and 50 cents for a subway token and how NOW I'm paying two bucks for a slice of pizza and two bucks for a subway ride (no more tokens). There's some sort of weird symbiotic relationship between subway rides and pizza prices I tell you . . . . . . . .

I don't remember the film, but it was probably a Harry Potter movie (might have been Spy Kids 3D), but the whole family was there. So my wife and daughter held the seats and my son and I went to get the snacks. He didn't want to, but I told him that I couldn't carry four drinks, so he'd been drafted.

Anyway, that was the day that I first heard a concession stand worker utter those immortal words:

"Will that be cash or charge, sir?"
After the initial shock wore off, I glanced down at the total on the register and replied, "Oh, I guess that'll be 'charge'."(*)

It was also the first time that the snacks for four cost more than the movies for four. (It was a matinee.)

TS
(*)Whereupon the worker informed me that the credit card machine wasn't working and I would have to move to the next line if I wanted to pay by credit card. So I paid cash after all.

chili dogs or if you have spent time in Cincinnati, cheese coneys with everything + extra onions and hot sauce, lotsa hot sauce. Add cold beer to enhance the gastronomical pleasure. I prefer a nice piquant Budweiser light, freshly opened, not stirred.
