What is distubing is (1) these guys were not strong enough to stand up when it counted and (2) that they insist on trying to make policy now from a safe distance. I think what most sticks in their craw is that all of their notions of making war were shown to be wrong. But what will settle the matter will be the results on the ground. If the Iraqi government proves to be stable enough to allow a drawdown (and there are plenty of unecessary troops there, bureacratic layers that keep multiplying), then they will no long be listened to. What they hope for, apparently, is that the stabilization can be delayed long enough to dfeat the Republicans in Congress. They have become political generals, and a threat to the republic.
