NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - The Dow Jones industrial average surged to its highest level in more than six years Friday as a weaker-than-expected April jobs report fanned hopes that the Federal Reserve's interest-rate-hiking campaign can soon end.

The Dow Jones industrial average (up 109.26 to 11,548.12, Charts) added 1 percent nearly 2-1/2 two hours into the session, adding to six-year highs hit Thursday and moving within 200 points of its all-time high of 11,722.98 hit on Jan. 14, 2000.

Unless you happen to be fully invested in equities. In that case it doesn't feel much like treading water, it feels more like having sex.

Here is the current CNNfn.com leading headline:

Living in a real estate dead zone

12:14pm: Hear that sound? There's an ill wind blowing through the housing market. Here's what the end of the boom means for home values, the economy, and you.

Where's the record point? (Everybody looks at the Dow, but S&P 500 is more reflective of more industries overall.)

As I recall, the Dow began flattening in April 1998, and stayed flat through the Nov 2000 elections. Highest was WELL BEFORE the election where "Clinton's best ever economy" was Gore's only actual platform.

Other than "Hate conservatives" that is.

Yeppers: A flat stock market, combined with disastrous dot-com results in the tech-heavy markets (also specifically set up in a different market so Clinton could take credit for that too!) for two years is "good" ?????

It seems so much of the USA economy takes place within the USA (i.e. dollars that do not go overseas) that the falling dollar is not on most Americans agenda.

IMO it was overvalued but now threatens to swing the other way.

Maybe those overseas US$ holders will all be trying to convert to hard equity like USA stocks, real estate and products and the USA can profit from those $s coming home.

I never like betting against the US$ because personally, I can always use more of them. -lol- Hmmmm, but than again only a politician can make people think that a low dollar is a GOOD thing.

Anyways, it should be interesting to see the deficit #s (I think they are lower than the "forecast") effect on the US$.
