"Eros Bound” sculpture by Igor Mitoraj placed at Main Market Square in Kraków (Modern Art)

Head on the market.

"Eros Bound" ("Eros spetany") sculpture by Igor Mitoraj was placed at Main Market Square (Rynek Glowny) in Kraków. This is the sculpture’s temporary location. Nobody knows where its permanent place shall be. In the Internet poll, the inhabitants of Kraków chose to locate the sculpture a Railway Station Square (Plac Dworcowy). The artist is of a different opinion; he spent his youth in Kraków and wishes to have his work placed in the town's most prestigious place.

The sculpture is over 3.5 m long and over 2 m high. "Eros Bound" depicts a man’s lying head. This is Igor Mitoraj’s fourth sculpture in Kraków, but the first presented outdoors. The National Museum has two works by him in its collection; one decorates the court of Collegium Iuridicum, the Jagiellonian University.

Igor Mitoraj’s sculpture shall remain in front of the town hall for 4 months. Then... perhaps for another 4 months. Before it can be taken to Maly Rynek (Small Market Square) - as Jacek Majchrowski, President, wishes - the reconstruction of this square may begin. However, it is known that Rynek Glowny is the sculpture’s exhibition only location accepted by the artist.

It is a part of human nature

The Tate values excrement more highly than gold By Catherine Milner, Arts Correspondent (Filed: 30/06/2002)

Critics of modern art will at least applaud the irony. The Tate Gallery has paid £22,300 of public money for a work that is, quite literally, a load of excrement.

The canned faeces of Piero Manzoni, one of Italy's most controversial artists, have been bought by the gallery from a sale at Sotheby's.

Pile of crap: each can contains 30 grams of Manzoni excrement Can 004 is one of an "edition" of 90 tins of merda d'artista created by Manzoni in 1961 as an ironic statement on the art market. Each can contained 30 grams of his faeces and Manzoni sold it for the same price as if it were gold.

The price paid by the Tate for its merda - £745 per gram - exceeds, however, the £550 that the contents of the tin would cost if they were made of 24-carat gold.

The gallery yesterday defended its decision to spend taxpayers' money on the work. The money for the purchase came from the Tate's acquisitions budget, which it receives from the Government.

"The Manzoni was a very important purchase for an extremely small amount of money: nobody can deny that," said a spokesman for the gallery.

Tate should have contacted me: I'd pile twice as much for half the money. Their loss.

He got a bunch of my tax dollars and used them to take pictures of crucifixes in jars of urine.

If I was near the head, I would grab all the pocket change I could find and then try to "score" points by throwing the coins into the eye holes.

I think I'd rather have moose droppings encased in plastic and made in earings.

Didn't Warhol & Co. pee on canvases and sold'em as "art"? What's the value of them babies?

I would also demand the resignation of entire membership of the "acquistions" committee. Those people can't be
totally serial about wasting money on "it".

I'm not sure "ironic" is quite strong enough. Frankly I agree with Manzoni, and the best part is that the gallery paid still more than its weight in gold today. For 20 FReeper points, fill in the blanks below:

"A ____ and his money soon are parted."

"There's a ______ born every minute."

There are enough people throwing money at bad art without you contributing to those holes.

Actually, the artist and I have the exact same opinion. Art galleries will pay any price for crap. And too frequently the taxpayers have to put up the money for this crap. At least this time, nobody can argue with me about that point.
