IRS, Social Security Administration could slow illegal immigration
The Mercury News ^ | Sat, Apr. 22, 2006 | LIZ CHANDLER

WASHINGTON - Two federal agencies are refusing to turn over a mountain of evidence that investigators could use to indict the nation's burgeoning workforce of illegal immigrants and the firms that employ them.

Last week, immigration cops trumpeted the arrests of nearly 1,200 illegal workers in a massive sting on a single company, but they admit that they relied on old-fashioned confidential informants and an unsolicited tip to get their investigation going.

It didn't have to be that hard.

The IRS and the Social Security Administration routinely collect strong evidence of potential workplace crimes, including names and addresses of millions of people who are using bogus Social Security numbers, their wage records and the identities of the bosses who knowingly hire them.

But they keep those facts secret.

Wonder if a kid could grow up and be unable to prove his or her identity because of previous use of his or her SS#?

Exactly! You try breaking any IRS or Social Security laws!

Depends on the law you break. If you are cheating them out of money they would be on your tail in no time. In this case they are making money.

Why should they care where it is coming from?

I would venture to say that this will become a pretty common problem in the near future.
I started running credit checks on my daughter's SS# when she was in high school.
I have a friend who's child's number and name was used to apply for AFDC here in California.

"How/why is it that some two bit attorney/judge/critter can demand the President or Pentagon release records, regardless of how it may effect our national security, but the IRS and SSA don't have to?

Good question!

They are obviously using kids numbers so there won't be a glaring conflict.

The Social Security Administration needs to upgrade their computer system so it would run with the efficiency of Mastercard or Visa!

You try to use a fraudulent number on a Visa Card and it will instantly deny use you of credit. Instantly!!

And enforce the law of employers not be able to hire illegals.

We need a couple hundred million march on DC!

Well, if I wasn't working my butt off to pay for the health, education and welfare of ILLEGALS I might be able to get away.

We have to pay someone to work for us. And they aren't cheap! We don't get to close our doors and walk away. I doubt there are many people who can leave their jobs and expect to keep them when they return. When you are getting paid under the table anyway or without any withholding, big deal. And if you came to this country ILLEGALLY what's one more 'problem'.

Healthcare; free (try finding them under ANY name when it's time to pay), Education; free (Free college tuition in many cases). What the *ell do they have to worry about? It's certainly not getting arrested while protesting.

I remember a time when we kids didn't have SS numbers, you only needed one once you started working. I got my SS number when I was 16.

I think I got mine when I went to a Military Academy because we were getting paid $110 per month. All of that went towards uniforms and supplies though.

When my husband's children were small child support was held straight out of his checks by the DA's office. Because of the way they report payments, every year our state tax refund was held up for "past due" child support. It would take us a good 3-4 mnths to get it back.
They only communicate with each other over legal citizens, you are right.

I don't recall when they made it mandatory for your kids to have a number. It may have been sometime in the 70's. I kind of remember thinking it was a ploy for big brother to track you from cradle to grave, just can't place the year.

Why should they care where it is coming from?

So, it's okay to break some laws, just not others? They are supposed to apply the LAW to everyone. I realize what they have working for the IRS. I've met many of them. I wouldn't want to work with any of them. Some of them are damn clueless.

It took me about three weeks to prove I paid something that I had a receipt for. I spent more on copying, faxing and mailing the proof than I was supposed to have owed. I didn't want it on my record that I owed them anything so I proved I didn't owe it, FINALLY!

Have there been Allen trashers around? I got an e-mail from him, and his stance on illegal immigration and border security seems spot-on.

"One internal study found that a restaurant company had submitted 4,100 duplicate Social Security numbers for workers. Other firms submit inaccurate names or numbers reports for nearly all of their employees. One child's Social Security number was used 742 times by workers in 42 states."

Good article and important findings...the IRS should be coughing up this information. If our Feds were really serious in doing something (which I'm somewhat doubtful), it would really help to see if there's suspicious activity.

When I was much younger an illegal alien stole my SS# and financed a car and some jewelry then let the car be repo'd. I had excellent credit before that and it took me 7 years to recover from that.

The illegals that are here are doing the same in spades and our government does nothing.

I started running credit checks on my daughter's SS# when she was in high school.

Sidebar question:
May I please ask which credit check service you use (or used) and
how satisfied you were.
I ask not just for myself...but I was going to suggest to my brother
that he do the same for his daughter (hearing about identity theives
now hijacking children's ID.)

Thanks in advance.
