Although he is known for his tolerant, humane views, he is a surprisingly harsh critic of homosexuality. If you are a Buddhist, he says, it is wrong. "Full stop.
No way round it.
"A gay couple came to see me, seeking my support and blessing. I had to explain our teachings. Another lady introduced another woman as her wife - astonishing. It is the same with a husband and wife using certain sexual practices. Using the other two holes is wrong."
At this point, he looks across at his interpreter - who seems mainly redundant - to check that he has been using the right English words to discuss this delicate matter. The interpreter gives a barely perceptible nod.
"A Western friend asked me what harm could there be between consenting adults having oral sex, if they enjoyed it," the Dalai Lama continues, warming to his theme. "But the purpose of sex is reproduction, according to Buddhism. The other holes don't create life. I don't mind - but I can't condone this way of life."

Very interesting views from the Dalai Lama. I wonder if the people who flock to see him ar eaware of these views.
You're right, of course. I think the thing that really ticked me off was seeing him give creedance to Dennis The Short's commie statements. It was disheartening, to say the least. I'm from the Cleveland area, can't you tell? :)
My favorite movie monologue of all time.
But...but...but...a blow job is not sex...Bill Clinton told us so, ROTFLMAO!
You are exactly right.
Certainly, he makes no secret of it.
So, in the golden time before anyone dreamed up a religion, the super-ego did not exist?
That religion must be pretty persuasive stuff. Is the super-ego inherently alien to human nature?
Actually there was no golden time before religion... the primitives simply didn't have the tools to make graven idols that would stand the test of time or the writing skills to blog about their beliefs.
Relgions create a super ego.
Maybe not. He may have just lost his cachet with the Hollyweirdo and limo liberal crowd.
This is likely going to surprise a lot of folks who THINK they are following Buddhist principles.
"I don't mind - but I can't condone this way of life."
He responded to a question. Good for him. More people ought to voice their beliefs instead of caving to the mishappen idea that moality is just ok.
He spoke it well.
I truly believe that he tries to be as good a man as possible, based on his precepts and principles. I surely have no quarrel with him.
He would be interesting to know.
I tried telling my ex the very same thing.
Do you have supportive evidence of a super ego existing before religion?
Mmmm, yeah. Just let me check the files.
Do you have supportive evidence that there was a time when religion did not exist?
headsonspikes is going to be very disappointed if we don't start tossing insults back and forth here.
I think we may be in the realm of speculation without any supporting evidence.
Bumpt
>>>Do you have supportive evidence that there was a time when religion did not exist?
Old testament stories.
>>>headsonspikes is going to be very disappointed if we don't start tossing insults back and forth here.
It is Friday night. I think HeadsonPikes understands delays.
So it all started when Cain and Abel made their offerings to the LORD? Genesis 4:3
There's not a lot of human history preceeding that event in the Old Testament.
Or perhaps Genesis 4:26. Of course, it would appear that Adam and Eve are still alive at that point.
Well, all that aside, Dr. Freud did think that religious teaching, among other things, was a source of the internalized norms and taboos he believed constituted the super-ego.
I wonder if Freud ever dealt with the 'chicken or egg' question of which came first? If one does not have a pre-existing super-ego, how would one even have the ability to dream up a religion that would impose a super-ego on oneself?
Well, it's just idle speculation as to how it all got started.
