Lisa Witter, general manager of the New York office of Fenton Communications, said it is important to get beyond stories.

"What I really focus on is helping nonprofits understand the difference between telling a really good story and how to package things as news. We're trying to give reporters news," Witter said.

Witter, originally from Everett, Washington, worked in Seattle for
prominent groups such as the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce,
Leadership Tomorrow and leaders such as Seattle City Council President
Peter Steinbreuck. Currently, Lisa runs the country's largest public
interest strategy and media firm, Fenton Communications, with offices in
New York City, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Lisa advises
organizations and ventures like MoveOn.org, the American Lung
Association, the "new" Air America Radio station featuring Al Franken,
and the Polly Klaas Foundation.

"My campaign is not only about empowering people, but about all of the
issues that progressives care about - affordable health care for all,
improving the economy, fair taxes, strengthening education, protecting
our environment," Witter said. "For too long, there have been two
Americas. There's an America - the city on the hill - where the sun
always shines and the tax breaks keep on coming for those who don't need
it. The other America is a very different place - an America where our
sons and daughters are in harms way in Iraq ... an America where
families are out of work ... an America with 44 million of our people
without health care. I believe it's time for a new direction. I believe
that it's time that we have One America - A fair America."

"We learned about basic principles of fairness at very early age -- at
home -- in school -- at the playground. And, we are deeply offended by
those that don't play by the rules. In One America, the rules work for
everyone, not just the rich and powerful. In One America, our values
aren't for sale. In One America, the American dream is available for
all," Witter said.

Lisa's resume includes managing the campaign for Washington's first
Latina woman to run for statewide office. She was named a 'Rising Star'
by the Washington State Democrats for co-founding the Institute for a
Democratic Future, an organization that develops and promotes emerging
generations of Democratic leaders. Lisa was also named a Fearless Leader
by Oxygen.com and is a co-founder of EMERGE: Women Leaders for a
Democratic Future.

In 2004, Witter participated in Showtime’s unprecedented reality TV series “American Candidate.” Created and produced by documentary filmmaker R.J. Cutler (“The War Room”)

At Fenton, Witter spearheads campaigns on public health, women’s issues and civic participation. For example, she was the lead strategist behind an American Medical Association campaign that successfully blocked NBC from airing hard liquor ads in one of the biggest advertising deals in television history.

She holds a B.A. in politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a certificate in non-profit management and fundraising from the University of Washington. She has also studied at the Universita di Padova, Italia and interned for the European Union.

Notice how liberals don't like to 'label' people...

On her "American Candidate" Web page, for instance, 31-year-old Chrissy Gephardt, logged 143 supporters. Other finalists include Libertarian radio host Joyce Riley, 55, who had 482 clicks and 30-year-old public relations executive Lisa Witter, who had 282. Black-, Puerto Rican- and Italian-American Malia Lazu, 27, had 277, according to the show's Web site.

Public relations executive Lisa Witter, who did make the cut, said the involvement of advisory board members such as Wilson and Kay J. Maxwell, president of the League of Women Voters, gave the show some clout, in her opinion.

Witter, 30, said she is from a working-class family in western Washington state, and hopes her mock candidacy will show other women that a young woman can be powerful and become president someday.

"The more the country sees that women have strong political views," she added. "I think that's a good thing."

Although she's in it to win, Witter said an added bonus would be getting more women to vote and to run for office.
