A lot of the stuff we use was in some form or another advanced by taxpayer-funded research. What is not mentioned is that the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft is a German independent instute, partially funded by government grants, and mostly funded by government and private industry contracts. A lot of cool stuff has been done there.
