My local Newspaper is an Inland Baby subsidiary version of the Tampa Tribune, and I don't believe that The left wing Editor doofus that claims to be a centrist could figure that out. I had a huge verbal altercation with him about how his reporter did not seem to be at the same Republican function that I was at because what he reported never happened. He defended the little crud because he agreed with what the crud wrote. It took about 6 months or more,but the little crud finally got fired. Sadly the Left wing Doofus is still there trying to make the Newspaper even more to the left in a Conservative County.

This is my first go on the Sunday thread. Frankly, I get too angry usually.

For me, participating in this thread has been the antidote to getting angry and shouting at the TV.

This thread (and FR overall) has been one of the great finds for me on the entire internet.  It does what I feel the internet is best at.  Not "best," technically, but what is best for society.  It returns us to the style of interaction and intellectual discussion of a smaller community from earlier in our history, not necessarily of only like minded people, but of ideas and supporting arguments that help all of us to understand, not just agree.  I always come out of discussions here, particularly on this thread, understanding more than I did when I came in, even if I don't agree with the overall conclusion that seems to emerge.

But what is most amazing about this thread in particular and FR in general is the astounding breadth of expertise, experience and understanding that we have to draw on.  The emergence, during the UAE ports deal of PrinceOfCups, who actually lives there and could provide us direct information, or the information provided by snugs through her direct involvement with the shipping issues involved, etc., turned our discussion of the ports deal into the most informative avaialble anywhere.  We all didn't come to the same conclusions on the ports deal, but we all came away better informed on the issues.

I don't think anyone will ever be able to argue that the internet is a "vast wasteland" they way TV was pigeon holed (rightly so).  So long as sites like FR continue to survive and people like these continue to participate that can't happen.

The Pope as Antichrist isn't new nor limited to modern evangelicals, though the groups you mention are the ones who carry it on today. The round heads of Oliver Cromwell often pushed that point of view, for example, and it wasn't just "yokels" spouting ignorance but was often official doctrine. To me the greatest crime the Puritans of that era committed (and earlier and later spasms) was the destruction of the monasteries and abbeys, along with their priceless art and relics.

Of course, the Roman church is guilty of much the same sort of destruction and oppression when they supplanted the older "orthodox Celtic" Christian church of St. Columba, Iona and Holy Isle.

Much of my own family history, dating back to the Jacobite rebellions, is intertwined with "the kirk" denouncing the "Antichrist in Rome." The back and forth between Mary and Elizabeth cemented a deep division in the disputes between the traditions that came to this country from England and the attitudes of American Protestants to The Pope.
