This is the part of controversies like this that I always have trouble with. "Being Catholic" has always meant to me buying the whole bit, papal infallability, trans substantiation, etcetera, etcetera. There are plenty of others houses in which to worship if you disagree. Don't make the Catholic church change to match your beliefs if they differ from what the Catholic church says its beliefs are.
Now, having said that, I agree that there is a place within any community, the Catholic church included, for discussion of such issues. The church (should that be capitalized?) has been doing this since day one. It's where the great dialogues and amazing writings came from and the church has modified it's position on any number of issues, over time. But to claim that a "protest" should suffice to get the church, any church, to change fundamental beliefs strikes me as silly and counterproductive.
Everyone should read people like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas. And I have just begun to discover the wonderful body of work by Pope John Paul II. I'm not a Catholic. In fact I don't belong to any church (bad experiences with churches on both the right and the left in my younger days, so I'm very cynical about institutions run by men), but I take great joy when I find beautifully written and well thought out arguments on the great questions.
Of course, I also really like my Heinlein.

Why do you people not tell our story? Why do you not say what is going on? Why do you come to our country and see what is happening, you see the schools and the hospitals and you see the markets and you eat with Sunni and Shia soldiers – everybody eats together, everybody works together –you see that Saddam is gone forever and we are free to speak and complain.
You see we are working and eating together and fighting together – Sunni and Shia – you see what we are building here, you see the votes we make as one people. Then you say to the world about a great war and horrible things and how we are all killing each other? We are not animals! We are Iraqis. Look around you! Look!
So now, The Military, another example of something the Clintons touched and corrupted. Everything these people touched they corrupted.
Because it not about facts. It about the Pat Buchannaites venting cause their boy got less then 1% of the vote while Bush won in 2000. Either that or they are knowingly acting as Virtual Campaigners for the DNC. Either way the Always Whining crowd is not worth your time
Good Point. However, hopefull this time we will get some real action out of DC. Will not be perfect but if NOTHING gets done, 5 years from now we will still be talking about it and it will be 30 million illegals. The people who care about this issue should tone down the 100%erism. If the Status Quo stays in place, the Illegals and the Left win. We need some steps taken. I think we will see something. May not be perfect but it will be better then the nothing we got now.
Sadly, few Christians take the time and effort to learn of our heritage. The Ecumenical Councils (Orthodox claim 7 - Rome has more) are fascinating and vital reading to get a grip on what the Christian faith is.
Take the Arian heresy. Almost overtook the Church. Had the East in thrall. (Jesus was a created being.) That's still an alive belief - JW's I know. Maybe the LDS (not sure on that). But, in 325 at the Council of Nicea, that nonsense was anathematized.
There is a deep history that one can learn of. Don't need to take someone elses word for it. Close as your favorite search engine, as a matter of fact.
There are "issues" that can be a matter for debate. Have been settled. Ordaining women to preisthood is not one of those. Never will be.

No doubt being groomed by the DNC for a political position or campaign. However, I looked up Marysville and its north of Seattle in deep blue country. Not much to worry about unless he runs for a statewide office.
I've been saying for some time now that I believe that we will pick up seats in both the House and Senate this fall, not lose them. I base this in part on just being a contrarian, always inclined to go against the conventional wisdom just because it is the conventional wisdom (and I'm right more than I'm wrong when I do that). I also base this in a belief that there are Republicans who get the point you are making. We get the "Bush is bad" RINOs plastered all over the MSM and think that is the dominant portion of the Republicans in the race. Those who get it and say so are caricatured as NAZIs and racists.
But then you have performances like Newt Gingrich's on Fox News Sunday today. He was hitting on all cylinders. I kept thinking that the White House should hire him as their Congressional liaison or as the strategy person for the fall elections. He gets it. And he's not alone.
I think you've encapsulated the issue here very well. I personally have faith that President Bush, on a fundamental level, gets it as well. I'm hoping the president will come out specifically emphasizing the border security portion of immigration reform after Congress gets back to town and push for a commitment to the broader reform dealing with those already here, perhaps by providing a sunset provision to the law, in order to separate the emotional from the necessary. It would blow the Democrats out of the water and it would start what I think would be an unstoppable march to victory in November.
