Haredim: Police 'humiliated' Valis

Some hundred haredim were demonstrating outside the Jerusalem police headquarters on Passover eve against the arrest of Yisrael Asher Valis, who was accused of beating his three-month-old son to death.

According to the demonstrators, Valis is innocent and has been "humiliated" by the police and the press.

The death of the baby on Monday led a leading haredi rabbi to accuse the police and the justice authorities of concocting a Pessah eve blood libel.

Rabbi Yitzhak Weiss, halachic authority and spiritual leader for Jerusalem's virulently anti-Zionist Eda Haredit community, said the indictment of the yeshiva student was "identical to the blood libels concocted by the evil Europeans against Jews before Pessah."

"Rabbi Yitzhak Weiss, halachic authority and spiritual leader for Jerusalem's virulently anti-Zionist Eda Haredit community,"

How can the same person be Jewish, live in Jerusalem and also be anti-Zionist. Does that mean he wants to dissolve the state of Israel?

There has always been a significant number of Orthodox Jews who opposed the creation of the secular state of Israel.
See, for example,

"I dont get it either."

I remember seeing a headline from a Jerusalem Newpaper - something like "5 crazy Jews go to Iran to support Mullahs."

I had to check and make sure I wasn't on some wacko site but I think it was the Jerusalem post... maybe this is the group they were talking about.

"There has always been a significant number of Orthodox Jews who opposed the creation of the secular state of Israel. "

I remember that debate from The Chosen by Chaim Potok, but IU didn't realize they would oppose the state once it exists.

The basic argument, as I recall was that prophecy wise (relating to the Messiah) it was not yet time.

The way one of them explained it to me was that Israel and the temple would be rebuilt when the Messiah arrived, and that until then, there could be no real "Israel". In fact, in their way of thinking, the existence of the secular state of Israel was delaying the coming of the Messiah.
