A real shame, isn't it?

The shame is that American students are losing their aptitude for science. Go to an engineering class at a typical American university and half of the students will be from India, Asia and the Middle East while American students are taking courses in "Transgender Literature" and "Whiteness Studies."

Of course, far too many American students couldn't pass an engineering class if their lives depended on it.

Tidbit for thought on that. I heard a story on the radio about university students not doing well in many classes because their instructors/professors were not fluent in English.

I wonder how widespread that problem is and if that has anything to do with a decline in students majoring in certain subjects.

Well, who can blame them? At least in terms of what we consider basic research.
The employment picture in the sciences has been whipsawed by
in-sourcing of scientists from the former USSR and Red China, while also
outsourcing is apace.

US students with real brains see the instability and the apparent ability
to make a ton of loot and decide to work in medicine, the law or
any of a number of technical endeavours (but not in basic research).

One NSF member I know is pleased as punch that one of his sons
has not followed him into basic research...instead he's raking in
a real living after 10 years in the wine bidness.

The shame is that American students are losing their aptitude for science.

Why would you go into deep debt (tens of thousands of dollars) only to find that there are people who will do the job for less that your debt payments plus minimum living expenses is?

College costs a lot of money and science/high tech becomes a new buggy whip industry.

People like you make me sick. When given a fair playing field Americans not only can but usually do outperform every other nation in every field.
