We have been betrayed, by both parties.
Throw them all out (except the few who are against this disaster in the making).

You come up with a plan to locate every illegal that is feasible and effective and I will listen to you. Moving the goalposts now?

Whoa! This is just the Senate, its only one house of Congress. The House of Representatives has a much different immigration reform bill. The Senate version isn't going anywhere until it's reconciled with the House version.
To: Don'tMessWithTexas
I understand and agree with your point that forcible deportation of 11-20 million legals is not going to happen. But I don't think you've really addressed some of the other ideas that people have brought up that would create some "self-deportation".
For example, criminal penalties for knowingly hiring illegals, and steep civil penalties for hiring them under a strict liability standard. Like others have said, crack down on employers, and eliminate the exemptions for independent contractors, etc. That independent contractor exemption is a biggee because that's how a great many folks get around the rules.
As for the illegals, one instance of being caught working illegally means a lifetime ban on ever being permitted to work legally, either as a seasonal migrant or permanent resident.
Anyway, do you favor those type of steps?
To: EternalVigilance
I thought that you wanted to get them all out of here. I mean if even one remains we are allowing criminals to stay in our country. Who is changing the goal posts?

You come up with a plan to locate every illegal that is feasible and effective and I will listen to you. I'd be happy with a plan that started with "of those who are detained/arrested while in the process of committing an illegal act" (besides the one they committed illegally entering).

Tancredo will emit a thunderclap from the top of his head, and bolts of lightning will spew from his ears. As I think about it, .. I just don't see the House coming close to signing onto this. They can only pass this Senate monstrosity in the House with democrat votes. The question is will Hastert let that happen under pressure from Bush, who has already signaled support for the bill? At this point, although I hope you're right after what transpired with CAFTA I've got my doubts.

Hello fellow Mass GOP member! I'm doing it. I've thought about it and I will be leaving the Republican party if this nonessential bill is passed. I joined the Republicans when I was 18 years old and no party I'd ever consider being a member of would support this.
I just don't understand it. All the talk radio hosts and their callers are mad as he!! over this amnesty the GOP Senators seem intent on pushing through. Rush said he has heard the faxes, emails, and calls to our politicians are similar to the ports deal - overwhelmingly against what is being proposed. And on these threads, there are only a handful of people for amnesty.
Yet, we are all being ignored and the GOP is committing particide. How can they be so clueless?

"the people at Ellis Island we're not exactly Rockefellows."
You missed the point, I'm afraid. the subject was about social services. The immigrants of Ellis Island (some of my ancestors were) were tested for TB, and other communicable disesase. Many of them were sent back. They had to have a SPONSOR who agreed to care for them if they were unable to. We have TB on the border in spades now, and in the prisons, much of it the drug resistant kind. Oh, and they had to learn English.

How would you locate the illegals that you want to deport? I would just go out my front door and keep widening the circle.
