I have heard that tuberculosis (sic?) and a host of
other "imported" strains/ailments are at epidemic levels.
Anyone know anything about that?

In addition to a list of imported diseases that includes tuberculosis, sickle cell anemia, hepatitis B, measles and the potentially deadly parasitic disease Chagas, officials fear what could happen if the avian flu, which is flourishing among poultry in Southeast Asia, mutates so that it is capable of human-to-human transmission through casual contact.
Not epidemic levels of TB, but it's definitely on the rise. Each illegal that brings TB into the country ends up costing between $55,000-$70,000 after they've spread the disease.
But these guys are necessary for our economy, you know.
