Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced the appointment of Richard M. Goul to a judgeship in the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Goul, 48, of Newport Beach, has served as a deputy district attorney with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office since 1989. He is currently deputy-in-charge of the sexual assault unit of the Long Beach branch of the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Goul was a law clerk for the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office from 1986 to 1989. He also served on the Cerritos College Board of Trustees from 1979 to 1985.

Goul earned a Juris Doctorate degree from Loyola Law School and Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southern California. He fills the vacancy created by the death of Judge Robert Sandoval. Goul is registered decline-to-state.

The compensation for these positions is $149,160.

LA Superior Court Nominee Deception Revealed
by Mike Spence, 4-3-2006 11:43 am (Flash Report)
Last Thursday I posted about the Governor's latest appointment to The LA County Bench, Richard Goul. You can see it here. I have been a critic of the Governor's judicial picks, especially in LA County where the ratio runs 2 to 1 in favor of the Democrats. The California Republican Lawyer Association introduced and got passed a resolution calling on the Gov to appoint Republican to judicial slots.

So what's the big deal about this appointment? The press release noted he was a decline to state. That is sort of an abstention in the way most us of count stuff. It doesn't count for you and it doesn't count against you.

Well, guess what a source connected in the LA DA's office told me that Goul was a Democrat. The Orange County Registrar of Voters shows that he was registered for about eight years AS A DEMOCRAT in Newport Beach until 2/21 of 2006 when he suddenly registered as a decline to state voter.

Why did Goul change his registration? Did he do it to mislead us judicial appointment watchers? Did he deceive the Governor's staff as well?

Either way Goul should not accept this appointment, the Governor should withdraw it and his deception needs to be explained.

How many other nominees have done that same thing?

This Governor is really a Democrat in all but name. His administration is loaded with Democrats. It would be a stretch to even call Arnold a RINO. I'll tell you why; RINOs at least have nominal party loyalty; Arnold doesn't. And this is the guy the CAGOP wants to be its standard bearer in the general election!

One of the silver linings to Pete Wilson's governorship was that he tended to pick a lot of good conservative judges, who remain(ed) in office long after Wilson did.

I've tried to console myself somewhat that such could be the case with Arnold, too, but if he can't muster even 50% GOP picks -- granted, it's LA county, but still, how about HALF? -- then I'll have to downsize THAT hope about him, too. (It's on a long and growing list.)

And yet when this board tried to warn the CA freepers to back McClintock and not aRnold, we were told that aRnold would win and that was all that mattered! Voting to get your base in power without the conservative credentials behind him or her, gets you this!

I know who I supported. This is yet another reason to make Republicans unexcited about November. If we're going to have a Democrat in office, we might as well have a real one.

I hear ya. According to my unscientific count, only 13 of 34 LA County Superior Court judicial appointments have been Republican.

One of the things that keeps California from going over the edge is its sane Supreme Court... but not for lack of trying sometimes ;-)

Good ol' Deukmejian and Pete done pretty good in that respect. Not sure how many were appointed by who.

Not to worry, his spokeperson will be out tomorrow to let us know it was a language problem.
