WASHINGTON - A slim majority of Americans are open to allowing undocumented workers to obtain some sort of temporary legal status to remain in the United States, with stronger support for the idea among Democrats, younger adults and more educated Americans, a new poll finds. Overall, 56 percent of Americans favor offering illegal immigrants a shot at some kind of legal status; roughly two-thirds of those ages 18-34 like the idea and an equal share of those with a college education agree, the AP-Ipsos survey found. While Democrats were more likely to support temporary worker status, with 62 percent favoring the idea, even among Republicans there was majority support, by a narrower 52 percent, according to the poll.

This is the second poll to show this, though it's not as overwhelming as the TIME poll. I'm really worried this is the death knell for border protection- Congress looked like it was headed for amnesty even when the polls were AGAINST it. Now we have two major polls supporting some form of amnesty. I know some will dismiss these Time and AP polls as liberal lies, but if that's the case, why did the polls earlier show the opposite? This has really got me concerned- I'm about to resign myself to the notion that amensty will pass, either before or after the 2006 elections.

I suspicion that these polls are being manipulated for desired results.

Other polls last week were showing overwhelming opposition to illegals and to amnesty for illegals--in the 70-80% range.

If we make these illegals into legals, then you can expect a deluge of illegal immigrants that will make the one we've just had look like a trickle.

The questions are loaded.... if they were asked honestly, Americans are AGAINST amnesty. Then again truth is the last thing I expect from the MSM.

I don't believe any poll. Polls have turned into a way to push ones political agenda.

Hey media!!! How about some news? Polls aren't news. They are attempts to make designer news.

Can you provide a reference to these other polls? This poll and the Time poll are getting me depressed.

I hope they're wrong, but if not, it signals that most Americans don't care about their sovereignty.

I do agree that something will pass that will facilitate permanancy here for those already here. I don't consider it a Carter style amnesty as he did for the draft dodgers though, as I suspect they will be required to do quite a few things similiar to the Kennedy Bill before getting a shot at citizenship. What is definite is that no one is going to find and deport 11+ million illegals...ever.

Lots of detailed demographics, but not a clue as to the specific wording of the questions. At least I always trust MSNBC to be impartial and tell the truth. /sarcasm

From 2004 campaign:

Associated Press/Ipsos : The Associated Press Poll is conducted by Ipsos-Public Affairs. The poll is a telephone poll of randomly selected numbers, with a sample of roughly 1,500 adults nationwide, produced between 1,200 and 1,300 registered voters ,whose responses produce the poll’s information, along with a smaller number of self-described ‘likely’ voters, who are defined as voters who voted in 2000 and are 8-10 on a likelihood of voting (1-10 scale), or who did not vote in 2000, but are ‘10’ this year. The respondent poll is pure RDD. Ipsos weights its poll, but does not detail the breakdown in its Press Release or Questionnaire, though some demographic information was released in their latest poll. Instead, Ipsos concentrates on the trend of questions measuring a degree of support on key issues, such as Overall Leadership, Foreign Policy, the Economy, Domestic Issues, and Terrorism. Ipsos’ reported Margin of Error is +/- 2.5 points for adults, +/- 2.7 points for registered voters.

Hey, if we make the current 11 million illegals legal, where will we get the 11 million illegals to replace the 11 million we just made legal?

Both polls are "push" polls---trying to drum up support for a losing position through the "me-too" effect. Note the nebulosity of the form of legalization. If this were a legitimate poll, there would be followup questions about exactly what form of "legalization" is acceptable.

For me, the only way for these folks to become "legal" is to GO HOME, and if they want to become REAL IMMIGRANTS, to go through the LEGAL immigration process.

Rasmussen: On Immigration, 66% Want Enforcement First

On the divisive topic of immigration reform, the latest Rasmussen Reports national opinion survey found at least some common ground among the general public.

A similar number (66%) believe it doesn't make sense to debate new immigration laws until we can first control our borders and enforce existing laws. Just 21% disagree with that approach. More...
