Students Who Want To Fly American Flags Walk Out

More than two dozen students walked out of Skyline High School Friday morning to protest what they say is a ban that doesn't allow the American flag to be flown on school grounds.

Several students said that they were upset that Mexican flags can be waved around but that American flags couldn't. They said that school officials confiscated their American flags because it has become inflammatory because of recent immigration issues.

"When the immigration laws came out we noticed that a lot of Hispanics were waving Mexican flags and what we were thinking to ourselves is like, isn't the immigration law to stay in the country? You want to stay in America, correct? So I said, for every Mexican flag, you should have an American flag right next to it. So a few people went out and started waving American flags, and that's where everything bridged out," said Skyline student R.J. Fogal. "That's when they started telling us that we can't wave American flags, there's going to be no flags today, or everyone is going to be suspended -- whoever carries a flag."

"What we want to know is since when was it against the rules to have an American flag on a car, in a car, in your hands in a school?" said student William Cassity.

Skyline principal Tom Stumpf said that the school enacted a ban this week that prohibits students to display, wear or fly any flag -- American or Mexican.

"The (policy) evolved because the flags were being used, not as a symbol of cultural heritage, but the flags were being used as symbols of bigotry, a symbol of hostility. They were being used to inflame different groups and we're simply not going to tolerate that at Skyline High School," Stumpf said.

"My paramount obligation, my solemn obligation at Skyline High School, is to provide a safe and secure environment and with the flags being used as a catalyst to stir up the students, to stir up the environment, I cannot condone that ... One flag was thrown into the face of another group and another flag was being brandished in front of another group and it was done to raise emotions, and we don't want that. We want respect -- that's our main goal at Skyline High School," he said.

The school has a diverse population and some students say there have been tensions between different ethnic groups because of the national immigration debate.

"I think our whole society is on different sides of the immigration issue and I can't control that. All I'm asking from our students is respect -- respect for one another, treating each other as they themselves want to be treated, treating each other decently, civilly," Stumpf said.

He said the students have a right to rally and those who walked out of class on Friday would not be punished.

"Sheesh. I'm gonna have to get a MIGHTY tall flag pole!!!

Please understand that I'm not telling you you can't, or anything like that, but there is no way in (pick your own expletive) that I'd fly a German or Israeli flag. I'm also of German extraction, among other things, but I've also lived in Germany, and the more time I spent there, the more I understand why my G'great-grandfather left there.!!!

You think California is socialist? You can't turn around there for running into another stupid tax, including the one for disposing of rain that runs off your roof, based on the area of the roof.!!!

As for Israel, I'll support them against the Palestinians, mostly, but they are an ally, not a friend. They've spied on us, and shot up one of our ships, and who all knows what else. At times, their best interests are in our best interests, but I won't make the mistake of thinking they're for anything but themselves, and the Devil take the hindmost.

I'm a native Californian, but I'll never fly a California flag again, either. I may fly an Oklahoma flag, but no bets. As far as I'm concerned, it's the Stars and Stripes, forever and only.

I think Americans deserve to have the Mexican flag flown over all their public buildings. We have let our country get away from us. It is our own fault and we deserve what we are getting. We were too busy with our lives to get involved back when we were being warned of this trouble and have done nothing to stop the invasion.

People warned us. People ran for office on the issue.

We should have condemned our politicians for telling us we were too lazy to work in our own country. We should have driven them from office over the insult.

Americans should have taken to the streets by the millions to avoid a foreign takeover. We were sissies and wimps...too apathetic and/or lazy to show civic backbone and American pride.

Now the enemy is inside our compound, waving his flag, and he will take over because we will let him.

An American high school prevents the flying of the American flag and we will do nothing about it.

A nation that does not secure its borders, respect its own sovereignty or fight foreign invaders will not long remain a nation.

Poverty is not an excuse to rob a bank. Poverty is likewise no excuse to trespass into a sovereign nation whose laws expressly forbid the trespass.

For their blatant criminal behavior, the invading foreigners are being rewarded with amnesty, free health care, free education and free social services.

"Mine is flown outside the front of my house 24/7."

Mine are taken down at sunset because they're not yet lighted. That will be corrected with the installation of a new landscape lighting system which will include spots on the flags.

"Lately, I've had paint balls shot at my home at night and woke up one morning to find it stolen, pole and all."

We all know what we would like to do to the perps.

"Someone does it again and I will install a flag pole in the front yard and run it up with a steel cable if need be."

You might consider alarming it along with installing a spy cam. Other than that, perhaps a doberman pinscher on a long chain (I highly recommend it).

...After they've given AMNESTY to every single illegal alien in the country, I suppose then, technically, there really won't BE any more illegal aliens here, WILL there???!!!

House Conservatives: Amnesty Threatens GOP Majority

When the Senate began considering an immigration reform bill last week that includes Senators Teddy Kennedy's (D.-Mass.) and John McCain's (R.-Ariz.) guest-worker/amnesty proposal, more than 20 House conservatives called a press conference to warn that an amnesty could cost the Republicans their congressional majority in the mid-term elections.

"In November, the majority that supported us over the last decade are not only angry, but will stay home from the polls," said Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R.-Ariz.)

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R.-Calif.) specifically pointed at McCain for potentially bringing down the wrath of voters on Republicans. "McCain and others will find out when their careers are shortened because of this issue," he said.

Rep. Steve King (R.-Iowa) said: "Anybody that does this [the Senate guest worker proposal] deserves to be branded with the scarlet letter 'A' for amnesty and they will pay for it in the polls."

Earlier in the week, when I asked House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R.-Ill.) if he would bring a floor vote on a final immigration bill that was not supported by the majority of Republicans, he did not give a clear answer. "I'm not going to tell you any specifics about it because we don’t know the specifics of what will first of all come out of the Senate and secondly what will come out of conference," he said. "So, we're going to work through the process and see what we can do."

House Majority Leader John Boehner promised to support the will of the House majority. "I am the Majority Leader," he said. "My job is to help move the majority, and one of the things you have heard me say, and I will say it again, when you take a leadership position, you have got to take your own personal positions, and you need to set them aside for the good of the team. And sometimes you are not in agreement with the team, sometimes you are not. But my job as the Majority Leader is to help our majority, and I intend to do that."

Rep. Tom Tancredo (R.-Colo.), chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, said he was "relatively sure the majority of the House would reject a bill containing any tinge of amnesty."
