Mexican President Vicente Fox is defending earlier comments where he insisted that the U.S. will soon be "begging" Mexico to send workers to alleviate a coming U.S. labor shortage.

With a "guest worker" program, I don't doubt it at all.

We won't beg. We will have a mechanism for:

1) SEALING THE BORDER: Bush's plan list this as the Number 1 item. He's done more to accomplish it than previous presidents. This new plan will amplify it.

2) Addressing those already present, fining them for their crime and forcing strict constraints on them in the future.

People, this is excellent. Item #1 is the top priority, listed first in Bush's plan, and funded. It has a very powerful impact on the whole affair. Illegals Can't Go Home. Think what this means to families. If a relative dies in Mexico, they attend the funeral and cannot return without jumping through all the very strict hoops.

The sheer power of that #1 focus attacks the problem vigorously.

Item #2 addresses the most profound issue of our time: Demographics. The ageing of the US population inexorably eliminates enough working age people from the population. "Illegals do jobs others won't do" is a false premise, but not for the reason most believe. It is false because what it should say is "workers about to be forced to pay for their crime will do the work that there are no people available to do otherwise".

This is a fundamental truth. We won't beg for Mexican workers. They'll beg to come here. The Bush Plan will funnel them into the proper paths for doing so and the US will triumph by having working age people when Europe does not.

Demographics are very powerful.
