Bible proves Earth is center of universe, author argues The Earth is at the center of Robert Sungenis' universe. Literally.
Yours too, he says.
Sungenis is a geocentrist. He contends the sun orbits the Earth instead of vice versa. He says physics and the Bible show that the vastness of space revolves around us; that we're at the center of everything, on a planet that does not rotate.
He has just completed a 1,000-page tome, "Galileo Was Wrong," the first in a pair of books he hopes will persuade readers to "give Scripture its due place, and show that science is not all it's cracked up to be."
...
For several years the Web site of his Catholic Apologetics International (www.catholicintl.com) offered a $1,000 reward to anyone who could disprove geocentrism and prove heliocentrism (a sun-centered solar system).
There were numerous attempts, Sungenis said, "some serious, some caustic," but no one did it to his satisfaction. "Most admitted it can't be proven." There's also no proof that the Earth rotates, he said. But what about Foucault's famous pendulum? Its plane of oscillation revolves every 24 hours, showing the rotation of the planet. If the Earth didn't rotate, it wouldn't oscillate.
Nope, Sungenis said: There just may be some other force propelling it, such as the pull of stars.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
"Nope, I was referring to the stuff Sungenis wrote before he got into this geocentrist lunacy."
. . . before he [PUBLICALLY]got into this geocentrist lunacy.. .
Not to judge a man from a distance, but this certainly thows most anything he said in the past into dispute.
Let's ignore that belief in The Bible is known as "faith."
You're yanking our chain. LOL
This proves the point that the ID'rs have been making all along, ID does not equal creationism.
Just as evolution has had their share of nut cases and frauds, ID will be saddled with these kinds of Bozo's. And everyone will still go home convinced that they are right and everybody else is dead wrong.
Unfortunately for us, crazy people get to vote in this country.
And Post on FR. :>)
It must be a harmonic convergance. I had 101 fever yesterday, aches all over, chills and sweats all. I'm still in the 99s today. I sent the wife 'round the 'pothecary to pick up fresh pack o' leeches.
> Just because a person has wacky ideas in one area doesn't necessarily mean they are wacky in other areas.
While that is true, we're not talking about some regular schmoe who happens to think that Paris Hilton could lose a few pounds or that French cuisine is manlier than American. We're talking about a feller who is loudly touting a completely *INSANE* concept... even wrote a *1,000* page book on it.
His earlier apologetic writings were sanctioned by the Catholic Church.
In fairness, it is hard for me to see a meaningful difference between creationist and IDer, and so I (perhaps unfairly) tend to use the words interchangably, and I really didn't look that hard as his "ideas" to see which camp he best fit into.
He could be an IDer.
self-ping for later read
I don't think it's the religion. It's the smug and sanctimonious attitude of some of it's practitioners.
Let me give an example. I'm sure you're aware of the Global Warming furor. For a long time I was quite skeptical of there being a general global warming underway because there was a discrepancy between satellite and ground measurements - one showed a slight cooling trend and the other a slight warming. One of the guys responsible for the satellite data and interpretation is John Christy. Well, one day I read an article of his defending Intelligent Design. It was full of the same nonsense we get here from the anti-Es. So, I said to myself, if that's the quality of scientific thinking that went into interpreting the satellite temp data, it's probably crap. And lo and behold, two significant errors were found and now the satellite and land measurements both show a slight warming trend.
The moral of course is that maybe you should re-examine your reasons for buying into his prior scriptural analysis.
We went to the moon???
My experience is that it usually follows. Quiz a creationist, and usually you find you have a nutrition-nut. believer in quack physics, wannabe driller for abiogenic oil, or (insert nutball idea here).
The stuff I read of his was written well over 5-6 years ago and received Church sanction. Some people start out okay, but later go off of the deep end. I don't think EWTN would have employed him at all if he hadn't been not crazy at some point in time. I think that it is obvious that he was considered okay enough prior to 2002 when he started espousing this wacky stuff that mainstream Catholic theologians took him seriously.
His books "Not By Scripture Alone" and "Not By Faith Alone" were not any different than other similar works of previous Catholic apologists that I have read.
I doubt you know much about Sungenis prior to this article.
True, but I know all I need to know now.
Let me see if I can paraphrase your opinion here. His scriptural analysis before matched what others had said so he must have gone crazy in the last 5-6 years because now his current analysis has had a crazy conclusion. Did I get that right?
I suggest to you that it is more likely that his methods have not changed and his older conclusions were as unfounded. Maybe, just maybe, prople can find whatever they want to in the Bible.
> It's the smug and sanctimonious attitude of some of it's practitioners.
Indeed. God may or may not be decent enough fella. But his fan club... sheesh!
Orbital Dynamics for the Compleat Idiot
"The coordinate system used in this tutorial has its origin at the center of Earth. In this coordinate system the Sun goes around the earth, contrary to what you may have heard. There is actually no harm in this viewpoint, since the origin of coordinates can always be whatever is convenient. It is true that Earth would be an awkward origin if we were interested in the motion of other planets (since they have complicated orbits in Earth-centered coordinates), but the planets do not sensibly affect Earth satellites, the subject of interest here, so the center at Earth will do fine."
