Adoption group backs allowing gays to adopt

As debate over the issue flares in several states, a major adoption institute says in a new report that it strongly supports the rights of gays and lesbians to adopt, and urges that remaining obstacles be removed.

"Laws and policies that preclude adoption by gay or lesbian parents disadvantage the tens of thousands of children mired in the foster care system who need permanent, loving homes," the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute says in the report to be issued today. It advises agencies and officials to make firm statements in support of such adoptions, forsaking a "don't ask, don't tell" approach that prompts some gays to feel their chances of adopting hinge on being discreet about their sexual orientation.

Florida is the only state with an outright ban on gay adoption. Mississippi bans gay couples, but not single gays, from adopting; Utah requires adopting parents to be married. Measures have surfaced in a few other states that gay-rights advocates fear would restrict gay adoption or undermine gay families. In Arizona, the Senate is considering a House-passed bill that would give married couples priority over single people in adopting children who are in state custody. In Utah, Gov. Jon Huntsman this week vetoed a bill that would have allowed biological parents to terminate their child's relationship with third parties, such as same-sex partners.

In Ohio, conservative lawmakers introduced a bill to ban placement of an adoptive child in a household where anyone is gay. House Speaker Jon Husted does not intend to let the bill advance to a vote, spokeswoman Tasha Hamilton said. The bill's chief sponsor, Rep. Ron Hood, contends that children raised by gay parents face increased risk of physical and emotional problems.

The Donaldson study, written by Illinois State University adoption expert Jeanne Howard, acknowledges that research on gay parenting is relatively scant.

"Still, virtually every valid study reaches the same conclusion: The children of gays and lesbians adjust positively and their families function well," the report says.

Next thing you know, they'll be advocating preferentially placing children with "gay" couples.

I cannot even figure out what this group is. The "Who We Are" statement on the website is completely meaningless:
The Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, founded in 1996, is a national not-for-profit organization devoted to improving adoption policy and practice. The Adoption Institute is a reliable, unbiased and respected voice for ethical adoption practices that respect all people touched by adoption
Wonder if Soros funded this one.

I spoke too soon in my post above. Actually, a further search provides this information about the president of the group:
Adam Pertman was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his writing about adoption in The Boston Globe, where he was a senior reporter and editor for 22 years before turning his career toward adoption. His book, "Adoption Nation" (Basic Books) was named Book of the Year by the National Adoption Foundation, and has been reviewed as "the most important book ever written on the subject."
Pertman is a leftie--a pro-abortion leftie too, despite his supposed pro-adoption stance. No surprise that he and his crowd would sum up the "research" on gay adoption in a way favorable to the practice.

I'd be curious to find out if this group has ever published anything suggesting that whites should not be allowed to adopt minority children.

Matthew 18:6

But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

A word to the wise.
