Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton invoked the Bible yesterday to criticize a stringent border security measure that, among other things, would make it a federal crime to offer aid to illegal immigrants.
"It is hard to believe that a Republican leadership that is constantly talking about values and about faith would put forth such a mean-spirited piece of legislation," she said of the measure, which was passed by the House of Representatives in December and mirrored a companion Senate bill introduced last week by Senator Bill Frist, a Tennessee Republican and the majority leader.
"It is certainly not in keeping with my understanding of the Scripture because this bill would literally criminalize the Good Samaritan and probably even Jesus himself," she said. "We need to sound the alarm about what is being done in the Congress."
Mrs. Clinton, who is running for re-election this year and is leading in polls for the Democratic presidential nomination, spoke at a news conference in Manhattan with more than 30 immigrant leaders after meeting with them privately.
The meeting took place in an atmosphere of mounting urgency, as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops called on its flock to oppose the measure, and tens of thousands of immigrants around the country stepped up a series of protest rallies in anticipation of a Senate vote on competing immigration bills next week.
Mr. Frist's bill, like the House measure, would make it a crime to be in the United States without proper papers and would add guards and fencing along the Mexican border, and speed deportation.
Some versions, including one proposed by Senator Arlen Spector of Pennsylvania, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, would expand the definition of alien smuggling to include help to illegal immigrants already here.

See my reply at #180, I should have done a double reply to you and #65.
I did define "help" for you above - a hot meal and shelter for the night.
So she wants government (immigration) policy to be influenced by the bible.
Yea, O.K. right after that " Do not kill" thing.
Get her in public saying she wants state influenced by church. BWAHHHHHHAAAAA!!!
I didn't even know that the Roman Empire had illegal immigration problems. Those Romans were crafty, you know. They probably had it all figured out. Like the Aquaducts.
The GOP has handed her this issue on a silver platter? What are you saying, clawrence?
Are you suggesting that IF the GOP was totally behind Illegal immigration, that this wouldn't be an advantage for Hillary? Yes, or No..?
Doesn't offering the illegal shelter "aid" them? At least for one night, it does - read HR 4437 section I quoted above.
If every Republican was united with me, we could defeat Hillary. Does that answer your question?
Which is why I am looking it up - although I think the Patriot Act(s) would take care of the unique issue of an al Qaeda terrorist vs. Hispanic gardener - I would have to say that ANY shelter should be given (although the priest risks going to jail just like if I harbored a criminal). I wonder if there an extradition treaty with the Vatican (given the history of "sanctuary" and the Church's predisposition toward mercy I would not be surprised if the Vatican has no extradition treaties at all, but I still need to ask). I am still formulating this response.
Sorry - I'm the only one defending Hillary Clinton right now (who would have thunk I would have to type those words here at FR ; )
I don't know yet how long is "too long" - that's why I'm looking into Church santuary, etc. I'll try to get back to you soon.
There's something just so terribly ironic that hillary rodham, the former co-president who wouldn't use her husband's name (except perhaps as an expletive) is called "Mrs. Clinton" in the article title. Not even Senator Clinton.
"Do you think the Church helping someone regardless of their immigration
status should be criminalized?"
The Bible is very clear on Obeying the laws of the land and those in Authority....
especially to the Christians to set a good example. If the Church is setting out to go against the law of the land, then that Church is in direct disobedience to the Word of God of what they claim as their standard and that goes for Hellery too and her cohorts that espouse that mind set.
The story of the Good Samaritan was not about helping an illegal immigrant at all! It was about binding up the wounds of a traveler that had been beaten, robbed and left to die by the roadside, by a band of thieves. (Luke 10: 25-37)
Just like today, there are women and even children that have been attacked in public and onlookers are afraid or just don't want to get involved to help them. If there was a term of illegal immigration in that day and time, I'm sure that the Good Samaritan(who was an up-right and merciful man) would have encouraged him to go back home and to come into the country legally, as soon as he took care of him, until he was fit to travel again. The Good Samaritan didn't try to set up a program ( in the desert to offer drinking fountains, feed and clothe and take of people) knowlingly for those that entered a country illegally. Churches or anyone doing that, are operating outside the law!!!!
If I recall, not too far back...there were those from the Government of Mexico that wanted to bring a suit against the U.S. for not providing drinking water in the desert, after a group of illegals died in the desert from lack of water after coming across the border.
Who is Hellery, to sit as judge and jury over Conservatives or Democrats - Christian or non-Christian on this score?
SORRY HELLERY!!! YOU ARE WRONG and TAKING EVERYTHING OUT OF CONTEXT.... TRY READING YOUR BIBLE YOU MIGHT LEARN A THING OR TWO!!!
Since I know your posting history, yes..it does.
But I don't want to drink the kool aid, clawrence. Try something else to unite us..:)

Leviticus 19:33-34:
"When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your God."
God's law of course and He says in His Word that we are to obey the laws of the land and those in Authority over us. Haven't you ever read that in your Bible?
Perhaps, Yes, it does say to love our neighbor as ourself, but not in breaking the Laws of the land to do it....that is clearly against God's Law in His Word!!
Perhaps it does, but I believe that the church has a right to offer humanitarian aid to those in need, not provide asylum to the lawless.
You are soooo very right about that one......"they would lose their voter base!!"
She's just trying to pander to the Hispanics and other illegals .... and thanks to their idea of the motor/voter law, she's just another DUMB DONK hopeful!
