I recently puchased a 4-pack of 23 Watt (equivalent to 100 Watts light output) "twist" bulbs for about $11 at a Costco. These were an off-brand, so I took a chance. It turns out that they're pretty good. Most of the ones I have around here are Philips or Sylvania that I bought at KMart on the cheap.

Special note for X10 home automation users: Some brands don't work well with appliance modules and will cause the lamp to strobe. Look for lamps that are slightly less efficient (use more current (300mA or more) than the name brands do) and they'll work just fine. Don't use a dimmer module!

LED flashlights are quite bright indeed, and go through batteries reallllly slowly. Something with enough output to replace an incandescent bulb probably would cost the earth though.
