Republican Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, chairman of the House Science Committee, announced plans to retire Friday after nearly 24 years in Congress.

"It is time," Boehlert told a crowd of hundreds of friends, colleagues and family members at Utica's historic train station. "I feel like I've done it the right way. ... This decision was not made lightly, nor was it made in haste."

This race will be competitive, but if the GOP recruits a good, experienced candidate (like state Senator Ray Meier), I'm confident of victory.

I can't agree. Not in 2006. We shall see.

This district hasn't elected a Democrat Congressman since Fred Sisson served 2 terms from 1933-37 (and yet couldn't even win a 3rd term in the horrid (for the GOP) '36 'Rat FDR landslide)). I doubt that will be changing this time.

Ya, and Vermont has only elected one Democrat senator in its history. The CD was dead even in 2000, and Bush carried it by 6% in 2004. Catch the wave. It's happening.

Well, this isn't Vermont, fortunately (and who knows, maybe Gen. Rainville will return their House seat to the GOP column). A 6% Bush district in NY is a heavily GOP seat. You're too pessimistic on our seats, dude ! Even Barone says the critical mass for the 'Rats isn't there yet.

CQ agrees with moi.

I think maybe I have gotten you a little paranoid about me William, which is unfortunate. There is an iron wall between my psephology and ideology. They are two totally different things. In any event, whether the Pubbie is a moderate, or moderate conservative (hard right candidates really don't exist much in New York), makes less difference, than the amount of money raised, the quality of the candidate and his or her credentials, and reputation in the district, how the local newspapers view the candidate, and the effectiveness of the candidate's presentation. Is the guy smart and articulate and likable, or viewed as something of a drone hack? Cheers.

The ideal candidate for this district would be protectionist, pro-farm subsidies, yet conservative on social issues. In other words, a Peter King who likes guns.

I might have to vote against the ideal candidate if I lived in that district. :)

By the way, farms don't matter in that district much I don't think. It is the home of John Zogby by the way. He lives in beautiful Rome, and has a phalanx of desperate housewives doing the phone polling work for him, in a converted factory space.

Replace this RINO with a good social conservative.

The ideal candidate is a conservative who's locally popular with experience in winning elections.
