Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread Thirty-Five

Posted on 03/09/2006 10:08:04 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

Belarus won't send S-300 missile systems to Iran: Russian Defense Ministry
Xinhua ^ | April 18, 2006

Posted on 04/17/2006 11:29:50 PM PDT by Tasha Dasha Doo

The Russian Defense Ministry denied the reports by some U.S. media on Belarus' plan to re- export Russian-built S-300 air defense systems to Iran, Russian media reported on Monday.

"The information published in certain U.S. media alleging that the S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems which Russia supplies to Belarus will be re-exported to Iran in the future does not correspond to reality," Russian Defense Ministry's information and public relations department said in a statement published on Monday.

"The anti-aircraft systems are sent to Belarus within the framework of the Joint Air Defense Group of the Union State, and, in accordance with the agreements, cannot be transferred to third states," the ministry said.

Russia had started sending S-300 aircraft missiles to Belarus, Air Force Commander-in-Chief Army General Vladimir Mikhailov said earlier this month.

The S-300 systems, which can hit targets at an altitude of 20 m - 45 km, and simultaneously engage six targets, will be a part of the Russian-Belarussian joint air defense system deployed in western regions in June.

Tehran, 8 August 2005 (CHN) –

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The delegation consists of German representatives, a country which according to Pottering has seen lots of economic fluctuations in the last couple of years, however, has had an increase of import-export relations with Iran.

Pottering believes that to take part in the Middle East market, Europe, in general and Germany in particular, should work on Iranian market, specially with regard to China, Korea, and Japan having successful wise moves in Iran.

Khamushi explained that despite Europe's main role in energy projects of Iran they have not been that successful in other projects such as the underground system of Tehran and other major cities."

"Terrorist group targeted Japan-linked power plant"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(Yomiuri Shimbun, The (Tokyo) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) JAKARTA, Indonesia _ The al-Qaida-linked Jemmah Islamiyah militant network based in Southeastern Asia planned last year to bomb a power plant in the east of Java island that is capitalized by Japanese, British and U.S. companies, according to a source in the Indonesian security authorities.

The source said JI was also investigating whether citizens of the United States and its allies were working at Paiton coal thermal power plant, located about 150 kilometers southeast of Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city.

It is the first time that a terrorist attack planned by JI targeting Japanese-related facilities has been discovered."

ARTICLE SNIPPET #2: "The source said the attack was plotted early last year by Noordin Mohamed Top, a JI leader and the mastermind of the suicide bombings on Bali in October that killed 20 people.

The plan is believed to be aimed at throwing the region into confusion by causing a large-scale blackout on Java island. Noordin ordered JI members to stake out the plant, the source said.

Two JI members who were arrested on suspicion of harboring Noordin and are currently on trial told local prosecutors that they were ordered to check whether foreign citizens, including Americans, worked at the plant.

Noordin is believed to have picked the power plant as a target because it is capitalized and operated by foreign companies."

"Sunni sheik calls for jihad against foreign terrorists"
By Aqeel Hussein
LONDON SUNDAY TELEGRAPH
April 18, 2006

BAGHDAD --

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Sheik Jadaan's armed followers said they have arrested and killed 300 would-be jihadis entering from Syria, many bound for service as suicide bombers with Abu Musab Zarqawi, the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq.

"I am doing this job because the foreign terrorists kill the civilians," said Sheik Jadaan, 52, at his heavily guarded villa. "None of them ever attack the Americans except occasionally; they just attack the innocents. This is to restore the reputation of jihad."

Coalition commanders were unable to verify the sheik's claims, but there seems to be little doubt that he is a bitter enemy of Zarqawi's forces."

Many moons ago I worked on rehabilitating the facade of a building in Long Beach that included a bar, a Chinese restaurant and apartments above. An appointee to a prominent position in a City of LA office by Mayor Bradley spent most of his working days drinking in the bar. He was said to rarely go to work in his office and used his position to order special assistance to his Mother's home for trimming trees and other services. Bradley looked the other way, even with our direct complaints to his office. He was just as corrupt as the status quo.

"Science Board to Study Internet's Impact on Military Ops"
By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "WASHINGTON, April 17, 2006 – The Defense Science Board will conduct a summer study on a topic that would have been inconceivable when the Defense Department established the board 50 years ago this year: the military implications of Internet search engines, online journals and "blogs."

Kenneth Krieg, undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics and a former Defense Science Board member himself, requested the study on "Information Management for Net-Centric Operations" to help evaluate the implications of the information network boom.

Krieg noted in a memo to the board the military's ever-increasing reliance on these networks and the way they increase the force's effectiveness. As information becomes more critical to military operations, the military will need to ensure it has the information networks needed to meet future challenges, he wrote."

NORTH KOREAN CHRISTIANS NEED OUR SUPPORT
Open Doors USA Urges Participation In NK Freedom Week April 22-30

For Immediate Release

SANTA ANA, CA (ANS) -- Is North Korea the No. 1 “Evil Empire?”
For Soon Ok Lee, a Christian survivor of North Korea’s political prison camps and author of “Eyes of the Tailless Animals,” it certainly is. She still has the physical scars from her brutal treatment.

She writes: “The prison camp that I was sent to is in Kae-Chon, which is in the southern province of Pyung-Yang. There are 6000 plus prisoners in there: 4000 plus males and 2000 plus females. Most of the prisoners are there for ridiculous reasons. Some are caught while traveling in places they didn’t have the permits to go to in search of food. Some are mothers, who had complained that their children were starving to death…they wondered ‘why do I have to die like this? Why can’t I eat till I’m full, like people in other countries…’ and people with these kinds of thoughts were considered to have bad ideology.

“If the mother is pregnant, according to the North Korean law that says that a criminal’s seed must be scorched up to its third generation, they abort the baby. If somehow the baby survives and is born, they strangle the baby by stepping on them in front of its own mother. I also witnessed many human experiments. They said it was pointless to test weapons and chemicals on animals because they were created to target their enemies – other human beings.

“I also saw many Christians in the camp. Because of their belief in God, and because they sang hymns in the camps, they were stepped on until death. If they didn’t deny God, they were often times burned to death from boiling hot liquid metal. I saw many unspeakable things. And these weren’t rare sights for me. Because I went through many physical tortures; I still have many after-affects left on my body. The right side of my face is still a little distorted, the left half of my mouth is crooked and the whole left half of my teeth were crushed. I live with a lot of physical pain on my body and it’s difficult to get through each day. But there are still many people going through tortures and human experiments even at this very moment.”

Soon Ok Lee says we as Christians need to speak out about these abuses. “Many need to join in and stop the Christian persecution and the human rights violations. Please join me in this effort.”

Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) adds: “In North Korea, we hear reports of religious believers being tortured, imprisoned and even executed for their beliefs. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom recently documented some of these terrible incidents that fall on believers who refuse to renounce their faith. We must all confront this intolerable evil. Please join me in commemorating North Korea Freedom Week.”

During North Korea Freedom Week April 22-30, Open Doors USA is partnering with North Korea Freedom Coalition (NKFC) members to focus on atrocities in North Korea, increase awareness of the conditions in that communist country and raise up prayers on behalf of those being abused and disenfranchised.

Among activities centered in Washington, D.C., are:

North Korea Genocide Exhibit on Capitol Hill – April 25-30.
Wreath laying ceremony at the Korean War Memorial at 4 p.m. – April 27.
North Korea Freedom Day Capitol Hill rally 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. – April 28.
Prayer Vigil at the Chinese Embassy from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. – April 28-29.

There are also prayer vigils planned April 28 from 7-9 p.m. in front of the Chinese consulate in Los Angeles (443 Shatto Place) and April 29 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Chinese consulate in Houston (3417 Montrose Blvd). For more information email Lindsay Vessey, Open Doors USA Advocacy Coordinator, at lindsayv@odusa.org.

To get your church or group involved in North Korea Freedom Week, go to the Open Doors USA Web site at www.opendoorsusa.org or the NKFC Web site at www.nkfreedom.org. For a week – April 24-30 – Open Doors USA will provide a specific prayer focus. The focus includes: April 24 – North Korean government and leader Kim Jong Il; April 25 – Prisoners; April 26 – Famine; April 27 – Religious persecution; April 28 – Refugees/Repatriation; April 29 – Underground railroad/activists; April 30 – Asylum. The prayer guide along with other materials, such as bulletin inserts, are available on-line.

“North Korea could be compared to one large concentration camp – with the entire population trapped in a nightmare that doesn’t end,” says Open Doors USA President Dr. Carl Moeller. “Like Soon Ok Lee and Sen. Brownback urge, get involved. Get your church involved. These are our brothers and sisters in Christ who are being persecuted, tortured and imprisoned.”

For the fourth year in a row, Open Doors’ 2006 World Watch List ranked North Korea as the worst violator of religious rights in the world. Christianity is observed as one of the greatest threats to the regime’s power.

NKFC is a bipartisan coalition of religious, human rights and non-governmental Korean and American organizations whose primary purpose is to bring freedom to the North Korean people and to ensure that the human rights component of United States and world policy towards North Korea receives priority attention.

An estimated 200 million Christians worldwide suffer interrogation, arrest and even death for their faith in Christ, with another 200 to 400 million facing discrimination and alienation. Open Doors, celebrating 50 years of service to persecuted Christians, serves and strengthens the Persecuted Church in the world's most difficult areas through Bible and Christian literature distribution, leadership training and assistance, Christian community development, prayer and presence ministry and advocacy on behalf of suffering believers. To partner with Open Doors, call toll free at 888-5-BIBLE-5 (524-2535) or go to our USA Web site at www.opendoorsusa.org. RE #4398

There are missionaries near Sino-N. Korean border who smuggle bibles into N. Korea. Obviously, there are (underground) Christians in N. Korea. Not long ago, a few dozens of Christians were reportedly caught by N. Korean securities. However, I do not know of reliable figure on the number of Christians in N. Korea.
