Former customs officers face jail for illegal heroin operation [UK]
The Guardian ^ | April 8, 2006 | Sylvia Jones and James Oliver

Posted on 04/07/2006 8:21:54 PM PDT by ncountylee

Customs officers who set up an illegal operation allowing heroin to be sold on the streets of Britain have been found guilty of misconduct after an eight-year police inquiry across three continents. The three former drugs investigators face prison after a jury heard how they allowed at least 1.7kg of heroin to be sold in Leeds and Bradford and collaborated with a drug smuggler on the run from UK justice. They also permitted heroin suppliers in Pakistan to receive a share of customs reward money funded by taxpayers as well as cash from street sales in Britain, and planned how to break rules covering informant handling and undercover smuggling operations.

Allegations against a further five officers in the north of England and a customs informant were not pursued by the Crown Prosecution Service after the long-running investigation by West Midlands police scrutinised at least 11 operations during which up to 200kg of heroin was imported into Britain during customs "controlled delivery" operations. A junior customs officer killed himself because he feared he was going to be made the fall guy for questionable operations.

Officials in Faribault say they uncovered bomb plot
Associated Press
FARIBAULT, Minn. - Law enforcement officials said they've uncovered an apparent plan to bomb public buildings and threaten public officials.

Rice County Sheriff Richard Cook said the plan came to light in a follow-up to a drug investigation when officers searched a farm last November.

Authorities said they seized more than 50 firearms, including assault rifles, and a fuel oil-and-fertilizer mixture, along with detonation devices.

New York City Tightens Security in Anticipation for Passover

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, police Commissioner Ray Kelly and community leaders met Monday to discuss the possible terrorist threat to Jewish community as the Jewish holiday of Passover is drawing near.

Police said though there is no specific threat and therefore no reason for a state of alert, the city's police department will increase its patrols in and around areas of Jewish community in anticipation of Passover, which is more than a week away.

"We will deploy our Hercules teams to major temples and synagogues in Manhattan and other boroughs as well. Our critical response units will make frequent stops in neighborhoods and synagogues around the city," said Commissioner Kelly.

The mayor said that the intelligence and counter terrorism divisions of the city's police department will be on alert, too.

Passover begins at sundown on April 12 and commemorates the exodus of Jews from slavery in Egypt.

Security measures flunk ‘dirty bomb’ test

Undercover federal investigators successfully bought enough radioactive material to make “dirty bombs” and transported it across U.S. borders using fake documentation, a congressional subcommittee heard March 28.

The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations also learned from the Government Accountability Office that less than 40 percent of maritime containers entering the U.S. are screened for radiation.

Police: No Hazardous Material Found At Defense Finance Center
Worker's Rash Prompted Lockdown

LAWRENCE, Ind. -- Authorities locked down part of the Army's finance center in Lawrence Thursday afternoon after a worker suffered a rash, but tests found no evidence of hazardous materials, police said.

Police said the woman's rash appeared after she opened an office-supply package at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service center at about 2 p.m. After she was taken to a hospital, medical personnel told the center that they didn't know what caused the condition.

As a precaution, a hazardous materials crew was sent to check the package at about 5 p.m., and about 70 people were kept inside the DFAS building for about two hours while tests were run, police said.

"Off-Duty Chicago Officer Fatally Shoots 2 Men"
Updated: April 7th, 2006 03:25 PM EDT
Story by nbc5.com

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Chicago Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said that the officer, who was driving a 2003 Hummer, pulled up next to a white pickup at a stoplight. The officer said the men in the pickup raised weapons at him, so he fired his gun.

Bond said it was too early to tell whether the two men fired any shots in return.

"We do know that the officer, in fear of his life ... potentially this could have been a robbery on the officer and he had to protect himself," Bond said.

Police are investigating whether the men intended to carjack the officer's vehicle.

"Based on the type of vehicle the officer it had, the time it occurred and the isolated nature of the intersection, it could very well be that reason," Bond said.

The pickup the men were driving had a firefighter insignia on the plates and a special license number, but fire officials said the person driving the vehicle was not affiliated with the fire department."
