Bush signs renewal of Patriot Act

WASHINGTON - After a long battle with Congress that went down to the wire, President Bush signed a renewal of the USA Patriot Act on Thursday, a day before 16 major provisions of the old law expire.

Bush said the Patriot Act is vital to win the war on terror and protect Americans. He recalled the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and said the country is still at war.

"We saw the terrorists' destructive vision for us when they killed nearly 3,000 men, women and children," Bush said. "In the face of this ruthless threat, our nation has made a clear choice - we will confront this mortal danger, we will stay on the offensive and we're not going to wait to be attacked again."

Bush's signature came less than 48 hours after the House passed the legislation, ending several months of debate on Capitol Hill over how to balance Americans' right to privacy with a need to foil potential terrorist threats. Political battles over the legislation forced Congress to twice extend the expiration date of the Patriot Act.

"The Patriot Act has accomplished exactly what it was designed to do," Bush said during a signing ceremony in the White House East Room. "It has helped us detect terrorist cells, disrupt terrorist plots and save American lives."

Republicans want to take the law into the upcoming midterm elections to show they are acting to protect national security.

The legislation renews the expiring provisions of the original Patriot Act, including one that lets federal officials obtain "tangible items," such as business records, from libraries and bookstores, in connection with foreign intelligence and international terrorism investigations.

Other provisions clarify that foreign intelligence or counterintelligence officers should share information obtained as part of a criminal investigation with agencies.

"President Bush? Wasn't he going to be impeached, or something?"

If he hangs his stetson on this stupid port deal, then things may get interesting this mid-term election. As Reagan said (paraphrased), no need to TRY and go for the whole loaf later, when you KNOW you can get half now. Short for the port deal after the election. The trial balloon whipped around the room and fell in the fish tank.

"After a long battle with Congress that went down to the wire..."

Rolls eyes.

Wasn't the Senate vote something like 89 to 10?!

Don't kid yourself. The Port Deal Hysterics just handed the Democrats the US Senate and probably the US House depending how the Texas case turns out. The crucial edge the Republicans had was National Security. The ignorant bigots with their Port Deal Hysteria just took the Democrats Senate PR stunt and spewed it nonstop until the myth of "Democrats are tough on National Security" is now cared in stonge.

Well Done. Way to pretty much guarantee the Democrats will take the US Senate back this year. The ONE issue the Republicans had the edge on was National Security. Way to take a Democrat Senate Election year ploy and feverishly propagandize it. Way to mindlessly regurgitate the lies, disinformation and guilt by association being pumped out by Chucky Schumer and the Democrats PR Machine. Spare us the pseudo Conservatism. Actions speak louder then words. Let's not kid ourselves here. The Port Deal Hysteria had NOTHING to do with National Security, the facts or better ideas. It had to do with the Whine All The Time Choir being mad at Bush. Since they were mad, they keep searching for new things to have a hissy fit about. The latest thing was the Port Deal.

The opposition to the Port Deal had NOTHING to do with facts, reason or data. It had to do with an emotionally hysteric temper tantrum. The Whiners were simply desperate to "Get even with Bush" for spending or immigration or whatever; so they did NOT even bother to learn a single fact.

Only problem is this hissy fit is going to pretty much destroied the Republican Majority. The ONE thing the Republicans had going for them was the National Security Issue. The Whiners have all thrown that away by rabidly regurgitating the Democrats PR Talking points on the Ports. Well done. Way to actively work to elect Democrats. Congratulation. Rush Limbaugh was the Majority Maker, the Port Deal Hysterics will be remembered as the Minority Creators.

They were busy trying to make political hay with the Dubai port deal.

The Dubai turned the tables on them and withdrew the deal, leaving Schumer with no senate vote to brag about. Dingy Harry and Dick Durbin held a news conference demanding the vote, and the deal was already off but they still wanted a "show" vote.

Nice! Thanks for the pick me up. It's been a very long day. :)

I'm surprised more people are not on this thread ..well, maybe I'm not. It's more fun for some to be over on the ports mania threads.

They are missing a good story.

"Way to actively work to elect Democrats. Congratulation. Rush Limbaugh was the Majority Maker,"

Rush? What does he have to do with it? Any thread with the word "Port" involved you get about a thousand responses. This means you have conservatives having heated, sincere, discussions about "something." And because this fact exists, someone did a poor job of explaining why we should give up port operations in six locations of senators who knew nothing about it. Now, who do you think that someone is? Rove? He said he didn't know. Bush? He said he didn't know. Well then, who is left? Is it ours? (noncompliant conservatives) What we can't discuss issues dear to us? We are un-enlightened because we disagree? Spare us.

Glad to see you over here Johnnie.

You are a real trooper. Those wackos on the ports threads are congratulating themselves for supporting Dems while Bush is just quietly working away in the background. :)

After the DPW firm pulls out of the port deal, conservatives who spent the last few weeks pretending to care about port security will go back to being completely ignorant and carefree on the topic.

A sad day for the Constitution, once again. And for people with sinus problems.

But the "patriot" act will only be used for terrorism. And drugs. And stuff.
