Media ignores homegrown Islamic terror trial

Unbeknownst to most Americans, federal prosecutors opened their case recently in the terrorism trial of a young American who studied under two Taliban-tied imams in California and whose grandfather was Pakistan’s minister of religion in the 1980’s.

The trial of Hamid Hayat, 23, is not taking place in the dark of night nor in a military tribunal from which the media is barred. It is in an open California courtroom, the very kind that has been overrun for trials of the likes of Scott Peterson and O.J. Simpson. Yet in the month of February, the New York Times had exactly one story on the alleged terror cell in Lodi, California. The Washington Post had none. And on the cable news channels, the trial has received scant attention.

Is this the new media barometer, that terrorism is only worth reporting if it’s successful?

Of course.
Successful terrorism means things blowing up, which makes good video and stand-up shots.
Not so with courtroom shots.

Also, successful terrorism "proves" that the government of Bushco is not protecting you, whereas terrorism prevented is evidence to the contrary.

Ahmed was recruited to Lodi by his mentor, Adil Khan, because the latter wanted to be replaced as imam in order to focus his energies on building an Islamic school modeled after Jamia Farooqia.

He came disturbingly close to realizing his goal.

Before the small town of 60,000 was rocked by the arrests of the imams and three others last June, Lodi officials had approved development of the new school.

Adding further intrigue to the case is the high-profile status of the defendant’s grandfather, Qari Saeed ur Rehman.

The former minister of religion in Pakistan, Rehman is the founder and still the head of the Jamia Islamia madrassa, an Islamic school believed to be deeply radical.

If the Liberals had it their way, these fine fellows would be attending classes at our finest Ivy League institutions.

Terrorists can recruit at Yale, but our military can not.

Ironic. Posting a thread about something not getting any coverage in the LSM, but doesn't appear to be getting much coverage on FR, either!

Prime example of the achilles heel of the "New Media." Pajama Patrol doesn't do their own reporting. If the LSM doesn't report it first, we can't rip it apart.

I was rather surprised at the low number of hits this thread took and the lack of comments. I thought this would be something that would be jumped on..

I too was surprised at how little interest the previous thread attracted. I guess there were more important things on people's minds, such as George Clooney...

Lately I have noticed an avoidance of "serious" threads at FR. Hope this doesn't become a trend.

I've been trying to watch this trial but there is absolutely nothing to be found, other than here.

I'm disappointed too, but not surprised. The "blogosphere" is just a different echo chamber than what "journalists" have at their own internal water coolers, IMO.

FR is really a clipping service, not a threat to the NYT.

All we seem to have been doing is enabling their other leftist competitors by forwarding mostly Associated Press and Reuters articles around.

Where's the Saddam tapes stories? Where's Jayna Davis on OKC/Iraq? Where's "citizen journalist" pork bill investigations in local districts, posted on FR?

Nevertheless, FR is a really good clipping service....

I have been following this closely.

This is a local issue for me so I don't have a feel how it plays nationally.

If there are developments, I will ping you.

Cheers,
