1 Every action done in company ought to be with some sign of respect to those that are present.
2 When in company, put not your hands to any part of the body not usually discovered.
3 Show nothing to your friend that may affright him.
4 In the presence of others, sing not to yourself with a humming voice, or drum with your fingers or feet.
5 If you cough, sneeze, sigh, or yawn, do it not loud but privately, and speak not in your yawning, but put your handkerchief or hand before your face and turn aside.
6 Sleep not when others speak; sit not when others stand; speak not when you should hold your peace; walk not on when others stop.
7 Put not off your clothes in the presence of others, nor go out your chamber half dressed.
8 At play and attire, it's good manners to give place to the last comer, and affect not to speak louder than ordinary.
9 Spit not into the fire, nor stoop low before it; neither put your hands into the flames to warm them, nor set your feet upon the fire, especially if there be meat before it.
10 When you sit down, keep your feet firm and even; without putting one on the other or crossing them.

What a self-examining read this can be.
"What a self-examining read this can be."
No kidding -
3 Show nothing to your friend that may affright him.
Guess this explain your veil. Just kidding my friend.
No wonder you Yanks chose Washington as your first President. This one's a keeper, to be taped to my bathroom mirror.
Thanks, cougar_mccxxi!
"Guess this explain your veil."
Very good one :)
Can't a guy have any fun any more?
I wonder what this one said. Too bad. A timeless document. Thanks for posting it.
Thanks for posting these - they're very revealing. Some are obviously too dated to be anything other than curiosities but many are very applicable. What a different world. In many ways, a more civilized world. We (as a social body) would do well to learn some lessons in respect and courtesy.
Wag - thought you would like these if you haven't seen them before, maybe pingees would too.
That is going to get broken up into usable sizes and used in Boy Scouts. What an addition to all we have and use now this is to mold the Scouts into Gentlemen of Character and standing.
Here you go!
If caught, blame it on the dog.
LOL
Can we make teenagers read and agree to these rules before they are allowed into a shopping mall? ;)
See...the man was not only dignified, infinitely practical as well.
LOL.
"It should be pointed out here that George was fifteen when he wrote these -- and without a day of formal schooling in his life."
Very interesting point.
To expand on your thought; it is amazing how these days formal education or the lack thereof is in most cases exclusively used as the only measure of one's intelligence, intellect and potential.
I bought this book for my son when he graduated. He was home educated, so he actually read it and made use of it.
:-)
