United States President George W Bush looked cheerful as he was accorded a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday morning.

Bush exchanged more than the usual two words of greeting with Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Commerce Minister Kamal Nath during the introductions to Dr Singh's ministers.

A visibly elated Bush later told reporters, "I have been to many capitals around the world. I have never seen a reception as well organised and as grand as the reception we just received."

Kalam receives Bush at Rashtrapati Bhavan

United States President George W Bush was accorded a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday morning.

President A P J Abdul Kalam warmly welcomed Bush at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan along with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Gursharan Kaur, the prime minister's wife.

After inspecting a guard of honour presented by the three arms of the defence services and a 21-gun salute, President Kalam introduced Bush to Dr Singh's ministers.

Among the Indian ministers present were Defence Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram, Commerce Minister Kamal Nath, Ministers of State for External Affairs E Ahamed and Anand Sharma, Selja Kumari, National Security Adviser M K Narayanan, General J J Singh, Chief of the Army Staff, and others.

Bush then introduced Kalam to members of his Cabinet, including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, Chief of Staff Andrew Card and Under Secretary Nicholas Burns, the anchorman for the US side on the nuclear deal.

Later, talking to reporters, Bush said, "I have been to many capitals around the world. I have never seen a reception as well organised and as grand as the reception we just received.

"It was breath-taking. And the horses that led us in added to the great elegance of the welcoming ceremony. It is an honour to be here. I have never been to India before.

"I have been looking forward to this trip for a long time. I am looking forward to work with the President and Prime Minister to foster a very important relationship," he said.

Asked how confident was he about clinching the nuclear deal with India, he said, "We have a press conference scheduled later."

Bush and First Lady Laura Bush then drove to their next engagement at Rajghat, the Mahatma's memorial.

To be honest, the chance this headline will appear on the Western world's MSMs is perhaps smaller than "Winston Churchill becomes alive again after 41 years being 'dead'".

I don't care if it shows up in the ENEMEDIA here. I love the internet - it makes the old ENEMEDIA irrelevant!

Good news bump. Not really surprising though considering the famou Indian hospitality. Glad that the president is enjoying himself in India while I am here in his neck of the woods (in W. Texas).

Forget it. Some people are idiots.

India should be a destination for anyone who enjoys traveling.

It is an experience that will change how you look at the world, your own country and yourself.

An overwhelming experience on many levels.

I think he meant to imply that India can pull off some very impressive ceremonies.

Are you paranoid or just a little "sensitive"?

He has maintained a clear distance from ecology fundamentalists who would deny India nuclear fuel and at the same time hector us not to burn high-sulphur coal. How exactly are we supposed to provide for an energy-starved population who do not aspire to remain permanently poor?

The one argument I find most entertaining is that he is doing all this for the good of the US. Of course he is. That is what makes his approach so credible and self-sustaining. He has been elected by Americans to further their interests and that’s what he is doing. If he can find that doing business with India makes sense within that agenda, it seems to me that we have all the elements of a relationship not based on frothy rhetoric but on sound convergence of interests. It is in this spirit of intelligent practicality, conscious of our vital interests that we should “do business” with this pragmatic Texan.

This piece of the article just about nails everything. Law of conservation of energy also explained well. Energy does not grow on trees. It has to come in one form or the other.

Loser media would have covered this trip in a big way if the Clintooooon was in India (like they did last time). Nothing strategic was achieved, but was good gossip for the loser media to cover.

Great thing is that we have Internet!!
