Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).
So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.
If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

One of the Snowe amendments to somebody elses amendment (I don't know which) to Snowe's S.2320. I don't know which exactly amendments are involved, she's offered up 3 or 4 (all close varioations of each other), or if this is yet another one.
Whatever it is, it's passed. I have 54-23
The Snowe amendment amounted to splitting the difference - half of the money she wanted to be allocable on an emergency basis was - the other half "goes through the normal allocation process."
Feinstein up pushing to get a vote on federal funding for stem cell research, and in particular, picking up an already-passed House bill.

I haven't been able to keep up with the news...but, I saw blurb on Brit's show about a "compromise" on the NSA thing...and showed Rockyfeller, crying about the Intell departments GOP members being in the pocket of the White House..
Can you please give me a synopsis on that and the ports deal, deal??
I don't know exactly what it is, but KLO posted that DeWine Hagel and Snowe had agreed not to press the issue with the WH. Their change of heart must have swung the balance to "no action from the Intel Committee," but we don't know what sort of discussion and agreement was reached.
The Intel Committee "backing down" doesn't clear the issue. There is still Judiciary and individual Senators.
Can you please give me a synopsis on that and the ports deal, deal?

Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas, Republican chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said the committee voted to create a new seven-member subcommittee that would scrutinize the eavesdropping under a plan approved by the White House. ...
In addition, the White House has begun discussions with several Republican lawmakers on legislative language that could further regulate the program.
"I believe the president is prepared to sign a bill once the Congress does work its will," Roberts told reporters after a closed-door committee meeting.
"When it comes to national security, I prefer accommodation over confrontation whenever possible. We should fight the enemy. We should not fight each other."
Four Senate Republicans, all critics of the program, proposed a plan that would authorize the National Security Agency to eavesdrop without a warrant for 45 days but require the White House to justify every decision to continue beyond that timeframe.
The legislative proposal, titled the Terrorist Surveillance Act of 2006, also would force the eavesdropping program to cease after five years unless renewed by Congress.
Sen. Mike DeWine of Ohio, one of the four Republicans pressing for legislation, said the proposal was backed by Roberts and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee and accepted "in broad concept" by the White House. ...
But the Republican-controlled intelligence panel voted down a Democratic proposal for a complete investigation into the surveillance by the National Security Agency by the full 15-member intelligence committee.

Mr. President, recent press reports reveal that despite its creation more than a year ago, the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board has yet to hire any staff members or even hold a single meeting. This board was established by a law signed in December 2004 in response to recommendations from the 9/11 Commission. Now, several months into 2006, we learn from a Newsweek article that the board's members will finally be sworn in at the White House this month. I will ask unanimous consent that a copy of this article be printed in the RECORD. Starting up the work of this important board, particularly in this time of unprecedented intrusion into the privacy of Americans by the executive branch, is shamefully overdue.Guess I have to update my judges chart. Mr. DODD ... And if we look at the pathetic security situation at our Nation's ports today, that becomes quite clear. Only about 5 percent of the cargo that comes through our ports is actually inspected. Indeed, the resources available to the Department of Homeland Security to undertake port and container security are woefully inadequate. According to reports, U.S. Customs has only 80 inspectors to monitor the compliance of nearly 6,000 importers, who are currently charged with maintaining the security of their goods during transit. The Coast Guard is even worse off with 20 inspectors dedicated to assessing worldwide compliance with relevant international shipping and port facility security codes. That's 100 people for the whole world. And it is a problem that needs to be fixed.

An individual shall be eligible to enroll in a plan under this Act if such individual--
(1) is an employee of an employer described in section 2(b)(2), or is a self employed individual as defined in section 401(c)(1)(B) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986; and
(2) is not otherwise enrolled or eligible for enrollment in a plan under chapter 89 of title 5, United States Code. ...
SEC. 8. ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION BY CARRIERS THROUGH REINSURANCE.
(a) Establishment.--The Office shall establish a reinsurance fund to provide payments to carriers that experience one or more catastrophic claims during a year for health benefits provided to individuals enrolled in a health benefits plan under this Act.
[This is roughly a plan to hook insurers with insured. It creates a HUGE Federal bureacracy to do so.]
