CBS News Poll: Bush Ratings At All-Time Low
CBS News ^ | 2/27/2006 | CBS/AP

(CBS) The latest CBS News poll finds President Bush's approval rating has fallen to an all-time low of 34 percent, while pessimism about the Iraq war has risen to a new high.

Americans are also overwhelmingly opposed to the Bush-backed deal giving a Dubai-owned company operational control over six major U.S. ports. Seven in 10 Americans, including 58 percent of Republicans, say they're opposed to the agreement.

CBS News senior White House correspondent Jim Axelrod reports that now it turns out the Coast Guard had concerns about the ports deal, a disclosure that is no doubt troubling to a president who assured Americans there was no security risk from the deal.

The troubling results for the Bush administration come amid reminders about the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina and negative assessments of how the government and the president have handled it for six months.

In a separate poll, two out of three Americans said they do not think President Bush has responded adequately to the needs of Katrina victims. Only 32 percent approve of the way President Bush is responding to those needs, a drop of 12 points from last September’s poll, taken just two weeks after the storm made landfall.

Mr. Bush's overall job rating has fallen to 34 percent, down from 42 percent last month. Fifty-nine percent disapprove of the job the president is doing.

For the first time in this poll, most Americans say the president does not care much about people like themselves. Fifty-one percent now think he doesn't care, compared to 47 percent last fall.

Just 30 percent approve of how Mr. Bush is handling the Iraq war, another all-time low.

By two to one, the poll finds Americans think U.S. efforts to bring stability to Iraq are going badly – the worst assessment yet of progress in Iraq.

Even on fighting terrorism, which has long been a strong suit for Mr. Bush, his ratings dropped lower than ever. Half of Americans say they disapprove of how he's handling the war on terror, while 43 percent approve.

In a bright spot for the administration, most Americans appeared to have heard enough about Vice President Dick Cheney's hunting accident.

More then three in four said it was understandable that the accident had occurred and two-thirds said the media had spent too much time covering the story.

Still, the incident appears to have made the public's already negative view of Cheney a more so. Just 18 percent said they had a favorable view of the vice president, down from 23 percent in January.

Americans were evenly split on whether or not Cheney's explanation of why there was a delay in reporting the accident was satisfactory.

Sam the Sham you have been wrong in your political analysis and predictions so you should be the last to talk about people disconnected from reality. You too is afraid that President Bush will do it. This possibility scare to death you, the whinny Buchananites, and most importantly the democrats and their media. When the bombing starts over Iran, all your delusions will be over folks and you will again face another bitter defeat this coming elections.

wait what the White House and our side can do to raise the huge support and emotions regarding nuclear Iran.

And how supportive of Bush will they be when oil hits $6.00 a gallon ? You think the American people have any more taste to expend blood and treasure policing the MidEast ?

I have kept on saying that Dubya and the GOP has time to turn it around since the summer.

Since election 2005 (when the American people kicked the GOP in the balls and Freepdom insisted that losing was in fact winning).

Since the new year.

They can still do it. It would help a bit if they actually tried, though. :-)

If we loose the war on terror it won't be because of President Bush or the troops...they are doing their duty. I think a lot of people still don't realize, we are in a real war.

And these people continue to ignore. It's pretty hard for the realities of the good news today to penetrate the fabricated HS being shoveled to new depths.

The next wave of scandals haven't hit yet. They are expected, from what I can tell, in early spring and played out through the summer/fall.

My prediction: Many Republicans, unable to stomach voting for a Democrat, will go "populist with credentials." That splits the vote and hands it over to the Dems.

It is not a question of 'surrender'. It is sensibly questioning grandiose goals. Like can we really transform the political culture of the Islamic world ? It always impressed me that the same policy advisers who sent Bush into Iraq sent Begin into Lebanon. Israel ended up having to hightail it out of Lebanon having accomplished nothing but to replace Fatah with Hezbollah.

Jveritas notwithstanding, the American people have had enough 'regime change' for one lifetime. Or do you think American troops would be welcomed into Teheran with flowers ?

Aha the $ 6.00 a gallon?! How about if UAE influences OPEC to cut productions by a million barrel if they got spit on their face because of the DPW Deal, then you will easily have a $ 6.00 a gallon? The American people will accept more a $ 6.00 a gallon if we attack Iran than have a $ 6.00 a gallon because we refused this overblown and distorted DPW deal.

Do you actually remember the WATERGATE times? It doesn't appear so.

It actually took many YEARS and a whole LOT of MSM propaganda and lies, for the American populace to turn on Nixon and for his numbers to fall. President Bush will be out of office, by the time, if it ever comes, for him to be on par with Nixon, at his nadir.

The good news out of Iraq?

Sorry, I missed it. Is that a curfew enforced at gunpoint reduced attacks?

You consider that good news?
