Sen. John McCain said Sunday that the reaction to a Dubai-based company's proposed takeover of several U.S. shipping terminals has reached the point of "near-hysteria," singling out Sen. Hillary Clinton for criticism.

"The near-hysteria about this is not warranted, particularly in light of the other major crisis that we're facing throughout the world," McCain told ABC's "This Week."

The Arizona Republican criticized Mrs. Clinton for urging that all foreign opereation of U.S. ports be banned, warning that if she gets her way, "We've got a lot of disinvestment to do."

The Clintons would have pimped the original copy of the US Constitution for some cash under the table, if they thought they could have gotten away with it. Her sudden concern for our security, concerning foreign interests, makes her husband's dealings with the Chinese an issue that needs revisiting. She didn't seem too concerned when he was selling our technology for campaign cash, or cash for whatever purposes he intended.

and maybe some FReepers who have been calling Bush a traitor and worse will look at who they've been siding with.

Again, I couldn't care less which Democrats are on my "side" in this, especially since there are equally anti-American Democrats like Carter on the other side. It doesn't change the fact that this deal raises extremely troubling questions.

Maybe it would be "inconsistent" to raise alarms over this deal while not raising them over Hutchison-Whampoa's control of operations at Long Beach. The remedy is not to sweep them both under the rug, but to start asking questions about the Long Beach as well, and maybe some other companies who perhaps shouldn't be having this kind of access to our points of contact with the outside world.

You made the initial statement. You made no mention of national elected office.

I love it on the (rare) occasions when McVain zaps the liberals. They never see it coming because they don't expect it from one of their own.

To my knowledge there isn't. But Halliburton could get into the business. Apparently they don't want to. It has a lot of experience handling cargo and shipping.

This was, to me, the most surprising fact to come out of the media coverage in the last week. Why would no American companies want to be in this business? Are the regulations or tax burden too onerous? This is certainly not tomato or lettuce picking - demeaning jobs that "no American will do". I'd be very interested in seeingt more background info that would shed light on this.

McCain is slowly moving to the right. I can't say I trust his intentions or motivations, but I'm not complaining either.

.........Is there an American company that does this?...I was under the impression there wasn't...

From what I've read, there isn't one, because they can't do it profitably.

Okay, maybe I was wrong on this one (I need to read some more and can't do it now b/c of a copy editing job deadline).

I am prepared to eat a generous helping of crow. :)

So McCain is pretending to be a Republican now?

Yeah, but when he does, you can't call him a maverick. (/sarc)

Hi mystery-ak
Here is info that I posted on another thread. hope this helps...
Here are some of the leading Container Operators that have bases at ports in the USA. (excluding DP World and P&O)

APM Terminals - Part of the AP Moller - Maersk Group with corporate headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark. North American Global Terminals include: Baltimore, Charleston, Houston, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, Oakland, Port Elizabeth, Port Everglades, Portsmouth, Savannah, Tacoma

China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (aka COSCO) - the national flag carrier of the People's Republic of China. Headquartered in Shanghai. USA Terminals include: Port Newark/Elizabeth Marine Complex, Baltimore, Charleston, Houston, Long Beach, Miami, New Orleans, Norfolk, Oakland, Savannah, Seattle.

APL - wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Neptune Orient Lines. Services to North America include the ports of New York, Los Angeles, Seattle and the Pacific Northwest.

Hanjin - ports in United States include Boston, Charleston, Long Beach, New York, Norfolk, Oakland, Portland, Savannah, Seattle, Wilmington, Port Everglades/Miami.

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) - wholly owned subsidiary of Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL) based in Hong Kong. Dedicated terminals at Long Beach Container Terminal in California, Global Terminal in New York and New Jersey, Howland Hook in New York.

Evergreen Marine Com - Taiwan based. American ports include Baltimore, Boston, Charleston, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Portland, Savannah, Seattle. Officially opened a new state of the art Pierce County Container Terminal at the Port of Tacoma in Jan 2005.

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) - based in Geneva Switzerland. US Ports include Boston, New York, Baltimore, Norfolk.

Mitsui OSK Lines - based in Tokyo Japan. Ports in the USA include New York, Baltimore, Charleston, Savannah, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Seattle.

NYK Line - Japanese based. Also includes Ceres Container Terminals, Nippon Container Terminals, NYK Terminals in North America, Yusen Terminals.

Grand Alliance - includes Hapag-Lloyd Container Line (HLCL), MISC Berhad, Nippon Ysen Kaisha and OOCL. Restructured their services following the phasing out of the Maersk-acquired P&O Nedlloyd vessels. Ports of service include: New York, Charleston, New Orleans, Houston, Miami, Seattle, Savannah

There was not one single US based company on the list of 23 Terminal Container Operators. Many of the companies do have US offices despite being based in a foreign country. So when you hear about an Arab takeover at our ports, you need to remind people that Japan, Switzerland and China already have their feet in the door.
