actor Darren McGavin has died
http://www.darrenmcgavin.net/ ^ | February 25, 2006

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Darren McGavin at approximately 7:10 A.M. Pacific time today, Saturday 25, 2006. Darren was just three months short of his 84th birthday. While we suspect none of us can imagine a world without the beloved, feisty little red-head, it is time to reflect, give thanks for his life and hold in reverence his memory. Darren is gone, but in many respects he will always be with us: as Carl Kolchak, fighting authority and battling monsters; the grumpy Old Man sending curses over Lake Michigan; as David Ross, the outsider, Grey Holden, captain of the Enterprise, the irascible detective Mike Hammer or any number of memorable guest star appearances, most notably as Joe Bascome on GUNSMOKE and as the washed-up old actor from "Distant Signals."

Please take a moment in your sadness to reflect upon all the ways Darren touched your lives, say a prayer and raise a glass to toast a career which spanned over fifty years and affected us all in ways too numerous to count.

"Someone else with a modicum of fame"

Fitting epitaph.

I enjoyed Darren McGavin and am sorry to hear of his passing. Ah, time is the cruelest master of all.

I thought he peaked in "Raw Deal" with Arnold. Sad day with Barney going too.

Oh, man. It is close, but "Christmas Story" is the one I watch every year.

One thing I really liked about Darren McGavin in 'A Christmas Story', was the looks he would give...he did not have to say a word, you could tell what he was thinking...I am thinking about when the mom is trying to get Randy to eat his breakfast, and she does that silly piggy thing with Randy, and he has that oatmeal all over his face..the old man looks from around his newspaper, makes a face, says not a word, but you can tell from his expressions, hes thinking something like'Gad that kid is a mess'...

Or after they have all opened their gifts and Randy is sound asleep on the floor..the old man, again from behind his newspaper, tells Randy 'Wake up Randy'...of course Randy just lays there...the old man gives another look...its like hes thinking 'That kids just a pathetic mess', and goes back to reading his 'funnies', as the mom calls it..

The old man, could give a look, that spoke a thousand words...no other actor could have pulled it off like that...

I also watch Hallmark quite a lot. Plenty of repeats, but at my age that's not a problem. I vaguely remember what happened the first time around.

What if two more go nearly simultaneously? Do we count that as four, or do we start a second list of three? ;-)

Wow, you're right! Darren McGavin could have played Feynman had a film version of "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman" ever been released.
