The effect it had on the younger generation of Communist Party leaders was profound. It shook their faith in the entire system. Those who came of age under Stalin, didn't change and they tried to hold off the inevitable as long as they could. It took three decades for the dam to break down in the Soviet Union.

Look at Putin. It seems that the dam break had no effect on him. Putin goes on thinking that the cold war is still on, and arms America's enemies to the teeth.
