Churches really don't need to ask for tax exemptions.

Besides, how can the government know they're a church if they're not allowed to ask about the church's religion?

THe trick is that when asking for government succor a "church" declares that it is an "organization", and that it's purpose consists of all sorts of things including education and providing relief to the poor, etc. You don't actually have to qualify as a "church" to get nonprofit status fairly easily.

The ACLU, on the other hand, by making a profit out of lawsuits is going to shortly find its own nonprofit status questioned.

My money is on their losing it over the "inurements" issue.
