I agree that George Washington was the greatest president and probably the greatest American ever born. I agree that this holiday should be officially called Washington's Birthday, but President Washington was at best a mediocre military leader. The rebels won, but probably in spite of Mr. Washington's military ability rather than because of it.

Of course President Regan was also born in February.

George Washington is not important enough to have his own holiday but MLK is. George Washington has to share his holiday with Jimmy Carter and LBJ.

If we are going to call George Washington's birthday "Presidents' Day", then it is only appropriate that we refer to the January 15 holiday commemerating MLK as "Activists' Day"!

One was the problems with this is that Washington was born before the calendar was adjusted. I believe his birthday was Feb 11 Old Style, which would translate into Feb 22 New Style. But the lack of continuity between the two systems makes the day somewhat arbitrary.

This entire shameful episode of getting rid of Lincoln's and Washington's Birthdays and substituting MLK's was just another scam perpetrated by pandering Liberals to turn real American heroes into faceless dead white males and get minority votes.

It's working. How many schoolchildren can recite when either President was born - much less specifics of what he did? I wager it's less than 2%. But I'd bet most of them could expertly tell you how to put a condom on a banana!

Now we don't even get off for President's Day. We get off Thursday and Friday for Rodeo Day. Kind o' sad, isn't it.

Of all the great people our country has produced, George Washington still stands at the top of the list. Courageous, humble, decent and the embodiment of integrity. Anyone who hasn't read Flexner's book really should. It isn't even that long.

Of all the blessings America has had, having George Washington there at the right time is one of the greatest.

and once again call the holiday celebrating him by its legal name: Washington's Birthday.

The author is misinformed. Back in the day, we used to celebrate Lincoln's birthday and Washington's birthday in alternate years. The holiday would be on the actual birthday, February 12th or February 22. Then the whole "Monday holidays" thing started and the holiday was renamed to "President's Day". So historically speaking, the holiday is intended to honor both Lincoln and Washington, not just Washington. Maybe you have a problem with Lincoln?

February 22, is George Washington's birthday. It will always be Washington's birthday in my house. We are having Roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, candied yams and bread pudding for desert. The 4th of July and Washington's birthday are the only real American hollidays!
