I agree that George Washington was the greatest president and probably the greatest American ever born. I agree that this holiday should be officially called Washington's Birthday, but President Washington was at best a mediocre military leader. The rebels won, but probably in spite of Mr. Washington's military ability rather than because of it.

Of course President Regan was also born in February.

The only way one is recognized is being first or last. Pres. Washington, Lincoln and Regan ... are remembered as first... Carter(many events putting him last) Johnson (Viet Nam and many other events)and of course "Willie" Clinton.

I'll have to disagree with that.

Washington saw many things very clearly, and acted upon that vision, much to the chagrin of many of his closest military cohorts.

The crossing of the Delaware was bitterly opposed by some on his staff, and some left the colonial army.
Some even defected to take advantage of British amnesty.

He actually had very little to work with on a logistical level, and that it is on that level that wars, rather than battles, are won. And he did.

Without him we would be British.

I do not refer to MLK at all. IMO revisionists and assasination have created a silk purse from a sow's ear.

In time Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton may well be as Mohammed is to the muslims.

Is there still a Columbus Day celebrated? If GW doesn't deserve one, why does he?

Also, MLK was not the only civil rights leader, why does he deserve a holiday to himself? because he was a Socialist?

Myself, I prefer to celebrate MLK day with my father. It's his birthday too!

Maybe we all can celebrate my father's birthday?

One was the problems with this is that Washington was born before the calendar was adjusted. I believe his birthday was Feb 11 Old Style, which would translate into Feb 22 New Style. But the lack of continuity between the two systems makes the day somewhat arbitrary.

This entire shameful episode of getting rid of Lincoln's and Washington's Birthdays and substituting MLK's was just another scam perpetrated by pandering Liberals to turn real American heroes into faceless dead white males and get minority votes.

It's working. How many schoolchildren can recite when either President was born - much less specifics of what he did? I wager it's less than 2%. But I'd bet most of them could expertly tell you how to put a condom on a banana!
