Forget this Presidents day garbage: It's still George Washington's birthday

February 22 is the birthday of George Washington, the man who, more than any other, made possible our republican form of government. The third Monday in February has come to be known - wrongly - as President's Day. America's political leaders should take this occasion to remember Washington's deeds, recollect his advice, and once again call the holiday celebrating him by its legal name: Washington's Birthday.

James Flexner, George Washington's greatest biographer, called him the "indispensable man" of the American Founding. Without Washington, America would never have won our War of Independence. He played the central role in the Constitutional Convention and, as our first President, set the precedents that define what it means to be a constitutional executive: strong and energetic, aware of the limits of authority but guarding the prerogatives of office. Washington not only rejected offers to make him king, but was one of the first leaders in world history to relinquish power voluntarily. His peaceful transfer of the presidency to John Adams in 1797 inaugurated one of America's greatest democratic traditions

I agree that George Washington was the greatest president and probably the greatest American ever born. I agree that this holiday should be officially called Washington's Birthday, but President Washington was at best a mediocre military leader. The rebels won, but probably in spite of Mr. Washington's military ability rather than because of it.

Of course President Regan was also born in February.

Here is a program from the BBC that I always enjoy. In Our Time.

Even the Brits consider the George Washington and the Amer. Rev the most significant event in History.

After Jesus, President George Washington was the greatest person to have ever lived.

4. Encourage morality and religion. Public virtue cannot be expected in a climate of private vice, Washington reminds us, and the most important source of virtue is religion and morality. Religion is the bedrock of morality, and morality is the foundation of a good society, he believed; together, they teach Americans their obligations to each other and create the conditions for decent politics and public justice.

The enemy Democrat Party is deeply saddened that many Americans still celebrate this great man, even though they and their socialist NEA, the MSM, and the ignorant masses do their best to remove his memory.

On Tuesday, February 22, I will eat a piece of cherry pie and thank all that is good for giving America this great man.

George Washington

Born ... February 22, 1732
Died ... December 14, 1799

George Washington is not important enough to have his own holiday but MLK is. George Washington has to share his holiday with Jimmy Carter and LBJ.

And you?

What will you be remembered for?

Like me, your claim to fame will be mediocrity.

The elimination of pres. Washington's name is noting but the Libs at work..

The only way one is recognized is being first or last. Pres. Washington, Lincoln and Regan ... are remembered as first... Carter(many events putting him last) Johnson (Viet Nam and many other events)and of course "Willie" Clinton.

If we are going to call George Washington's birthday "Presidents' Day", then it is only appropriate that we refer to the January 15 holiday commemerating MLK as "Activists' Day"!

Yeah, you're right, General Washington was just lucky. [rolling eyes].

I'll have to disagree with that.

Washington saw many things very clearly, and acted upon that vision, much to the chagrin of many of his closest military cohorts.

The crossing of the Delaware was bitterly opposed by some on his staff, and some left the colonial army.
Some even defected to take advantage of British amnesty.

He actually had very little to work with on a logistical level, and that it is on that level that wars, rather than battles, are won. And he did.

Without him we would be British.

I do not refer to MLK at all. IMO revisionists and assasination have created a silk purse from a sow's ear.

In time Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton may well be as Mohammed is to the muslims.

While I do not begrudge others their hero's, I don't do Islam.

I agree with your post, and would like to add to it.

Is there still a Columbus Day celebrated? If GW doesn't deserve one, why does he?

Also, MLK was not the only civil rights leader, why does he deserve a holiday to himself? because he was a Socialist?

Myself, I prefer to celebrate MLK day with my father. It's his birthday too!

Maybe we all can celebrate my father's birthday?

One was the problems with this is that Washington was born before the calendar was adjusted. I believe his birthday was Feb 11 Old Style, which would translate into Feb 22 New Style. But the lack of continuity between the two systems makes the day somewhat arbitrary.

This entire shameful episode of getting rid of Lincoln's and Washington's Birthdays and substituting MLK's was just another scam perpetrated by pandering Liberals to turn real American heroes into faceless dead white males and get minority votes.

It's working. How many schoolchildren can recite when either President was born - much less specifics of what he did? I wager it's less than 2%. But I'd bet most of them could expertly tell you how to put a condom on a banana!
