Domenici Introduces Amnesty/Guest Worker Bill
Federation for American Immigration Reform ^ | February 17, 2006

Posted on 02/19/2006 11:19:46 PM PST by Rick_Michael

In preparation for a debate in the Senate next month on immigration policy, Senator Pete Domenici (R-New Mexico) has introduced legislation that would grant amnesty to an estimated 12 million people now living illegally in the U.S. and admit an additional 500,000 new guest workers plus dependant family members every year. Under the Domenici legislation, known as the Welcoming Immigrants to a Secure Homeland (WISH) of 2006 bill, all of the "guest workers" would eventually be allowed to become permanent residents.

In addition to creating a new guest worker visa, the WISH Act would vastly expand existing guest worker programs. Under the Domenici bill, limits on H-1B high tech workers would be virtually eliminated, and foreign student visas would be almost automatically convertible to permanent residency.

"There is virtually no American job, educational opportunity, or community that would not be undermined by this disastrous piece of legislation," said Dan Stein, president of FAIR. "Under the WISH Act, millions of illegal aliens would be rewarded with amnesty, and business interests would be granted access to unlimited numbers of guest workers who will never have to leave. For ordinary Americans, the legislation holds the promise of downwardly spiraling wages, massive population growth and the collapse of vital social institutions.

"The vast majority of the American public is demanding that our nation's immigration laws be enforced," Stein continued. "Under the Domenici bill, our nation's immigration laws would simply be eliminated. Americans would have no greater claim to the right to live and work in the United States than anyone, anywhere on the face of the planet."

The levels of future immigration to the United States that would result from passage of the WISH Act would be staggering. Under our current legal immigration policy, the United States admits nearly one million people annually, the overwhelming majority coming to reunite with extended family members in this country. The Domenici amnesty would not only allow the estimated 12 million illegal aliens now here to become permanent residents, but would also entitle them to petition for their extended families to join them here. On top of that, if each of the 500,000 new permanent guest workers created annually by the WISH Act brought just two dependants, that would result in 1.5 million more immigrants arriving every year. Added to that figure would be an unlimited number of H-1B workers and foreign college graduates who convert student visas into permanent residency visas.

"The damage that the Domenici bill would do every aspect of life in America would be incalculable," said Stein. "In very short order, America would become a vastly overpopulated nation devoid of a middle class. The United States Senate owes it to the American public to reject this and similar amnesty and guest worker bills and focus on protecting our borders and the survival of the American middle class," concluded Stein.

Well, Pete, If this is true, You have seen the last dollar from me, and the last time I'll have said you are one of the few halfway decent Republicans left in the Senate is past.

It's this kind of legislation that will put Chavez-like presidents in power within decades. We need to nominate people that will secure our country and borders, and we need them now!

"Added to that figure would be an unlimited number of H-1B workers and foreign college graduates who convert student visas into permanent residency visas."

this is BS. that makes no sense. if you are a permanent resident you have a green card you have no use for an H1b. Foreign college graduates get permanent residency? what is this guy smoking?

that sentence makes no sense what-so-ever.

this kind of stuff really frustrates me because i've worked my butt off for almost a decade going trough the legal process just to see people rewarded for breaking the law. I wonder if i go to get a green card under an amnesty, i would be turned away because i haven;t broken the law.

From Domenici's Press Release:

Domenici Unveils U.S. Immigration Reform Bill

The bill would create a guest worker visa for up to three 3-year periods (9 years total) for immigrants to gain legal entry into the Unites States, and potentially apply for permanent resident status. The bill would allow 500,000 such visas the first year, with subsequent visas increased based on market need.

The measure establishes a program to allow illegal immigrants now in the United States—estimated at up to 12 million people—to apply for legal guest worker status. This proposal entails paying a fine and obtaining a legal guest worker visa.

He would make the poor dears pay a fine! They are already impoverished, and this hardhearted beast Domenici would make them pay a fine! I am sure the Democrats will rectify this outrage, and have the taxpayers pay the fine for them, and then give them an educational grant, so they can learn all that citizenship stuff.

That's why I said " If this it true".

I've known 'Pete' personally for more than 30 years; This doesn't sound like him; but he may have finally succumbed to 'Washingtonitis'. It has afflicted other strong and wise men before; I doubt he is completely immune.

You can bet that he will be hearing from me ASAP, and I will demand clarification..

Next time you talk to him tell him this is a monstrosity. Quite frankly IMO it borders on treason.

Great nomination, eh!?

What are you talking about? Domenici has been a Senator from NM for years but this is about as whacked as I have seen him. I don't know if the intent is to be so outrageous as to create a backlash or what he wants. Might as well just open all the borders as do this.

Thanks for the link... I should have checked further before flying off the handle like I did.

It is apparently not as bad as the original article indicates..... But it still sucks. Pete ought to know better.

I don't know what his intent is, but if this is what it is...it's a subtle way of betraying core conservatives. I don't like people whom shake my hand, then stab me in the back. I'm just hoping he's not that kind of guy. It seems there's one person here that knows him, I would like to hear what kind of explanation he has on this...MAYBE there is a good one.

It is time for a little real world stuff.
The 12 or what ever million illegals are just that, illegal, but, we can`t and won`t pull them out of their houses and throw them out of the country. As much as some would like that, it just isn`t going to happen.
What we need to do is stop anymore from coming here illegally and then make the ones that are here, earn their right to stay. Or, we could just kill them.

More garbage from an agribiz Republican. Pete Domenici in this case who I usually respect. I would love to see a list of his major campaign donors. Any guest worker visas for 12-20 million illegal aliens will result in at least triple that number coming here. That means wives and families and others inspired to jam in here for another amnesty in the future. We will become like Brazil.

We don't actually 'talk'. He and my father were semi- buddies; Worked on a lot of municipal and state law stuff in the 60s and 70s together...

I'm less than doggie doo on the sole of his shoe. I only hear from him when he is asking for money, and never get an answer from him even when I ask a specific question.

Apparently the actual bill is not as bad as the article indicates... Thank God...

But it still is a knife in the back as far as I'm concerned.... Not quite enough to kill instantly... But the infection from the shallower stab wound will probably kill us slowly and painfully nonetheless.
