The author quotes " The conservative will respond, Even though I believe in freedom, free enterprise, and limited government, weve got to continue waging the war on drugs.
As has been pointed out not all conservatives support the war on drugs. Plus why are all drugs lumped together. I sure don't view the occasional use of pot in the same way I view a meth factory.
I don't think drug usage should be a crime. But if a crime is connected with the druge use ( robbery to get money for crack) the person should serve time for the crime and have to go through a rehab program. But throwing people in jail for drug use is a waste of limited resources. Too many criminals too little jail space. Keep jail for the real dangers to society.
I consider myself more libertarian than a Republican, and I think those making a profit should be severely punished, death penalty IMO. Those using, should be punished by a caning like in Singapore. As a matter of fact, we could lower costs considerably, if we used corporal punishment for various offenses, instead of the "cruel and unusual punishment" of prison. Rapists and murderers, of course deserve to be locked away from society, as do others. Those who commit robberies, would be better off with a involuntary servitude for those they victimize. Make them a slave until the debt is paid. With todays electronics, it could be done. It makes no sense to let the state make the money from the work release program, let the workers pay the victims or stay in prison.
thank you for your rational response.
Exactly. Addiction is a public health problem. I'd take the drug warriors' claim that they are interested in protecting people more seriously if they didn't pepper their posts with overt hostility toward others whose only fault is ingesting a substance they don't use (allegedly).
To believe that the only people who want to control your life are Democrats is foolish.
How dare you pollute this fine forum with your reasonable replies. I'm disgusted. Death to all drug users!
