Thoughts on the Olympics (a quote from Bryant Gumbel)
"Just the Tip" ^ | February 13, 2006 | Todd Christian

Mr. Gumbel's statement: “Because [the Winter Olympics] are so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too. Like try not to be incredulous when someone tries to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of Blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention.”

I don't mind Bode because at least he is gracious when he loses and doesn't act like it's the end of the world.

That's because Bode Miller knows something that the casual American viewer of the Winter Olympics does not: That winning the World Cup for Skiing is a much bigger deal than winning an Olympic Gold Medal. It's the difference between being a 20-game winner with a league-low ERA, and a pitcher winning a single playoff game.

I haven't noticed that the dominance of African-Americans in track and field in the Summer Games bothers Bryant. Why is he bothered by the fact Caucasians dominate winter sports? Race would appear to be the explanation.

Well, I found a number of different places on the web that had that quote. Also found out about it from Larry Elder's radio show. So it appears to be legit. I emailed HBO about it - will see if they answer (not holding my breath).

"paucity" means:an inadequacy or lack of something or scarcity, deficiency, of little account.

The word just seems to fit Poor Wittle Bryant. Another fine example of the MSM's gift to the world. He is the best example of paucity I can think of.

Personally, I could barely listen to the guy - maybe it was me, but he always seemed so depressed. At least his delivery made me feel that way.

Personally, I could barely listen to the guy - maybe it was just me, but he always seemed so depressed. At least his delivery made me feel that way.

No kidding. Just like these idiots (Jesse Jackson comes to mind) who bemoan how few black coaches there are in the NFL.

Note to Jesse: Hey, idiot, when you start complaining about large the huge percentage of black players there are in the NFL, then I will consider you to be decent. Until then, you are just a professional racist.

Our Kind of People: Inside America's Black Upper Class

Scumball is mentioned in this book, he comes from a very elite social class of blacks.  Some remain humble while others like scumball become very arrogant thinking they are above others.

From Page 1 of the book: Bryant Gumbal is, but Bill Cosby isn't.
Lena Horne is, but Whitney Houston isn't.  Andrew Young is, but Jesse Jackson isn't.
And neither is Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, Clarence Thomas, or Quincy Jones.
And even though both of them try extremely hard, neither Diana Ross nor Robin Givens will ever be."

I saw Gumbel playing at the Pebble Beach golf tournament years ago and he was looking real heavy. Just as he was readying to putt, he bent over to pick a leaf off the green and his butt looked the size of a movie screen. Someone from the back of the crowd yelled (very loudly) "What a Fat A$$". The entire crowd chuckled and Gumbel got this really pissed off look on his face. Of course, he missed the putt & he stormed off, with many people still laughing.

To this day, when I think of Bryant Gumbel, I think of this moment....and smile.

What a beautiful moment. Of course whoever said that must have been racist, right?

Oh - and how many blacks were playing in that tournament? What a hypocritical, vitriolic man.

Why do you think the white man invented winter sports and swimming, so we can compete. Jeez, everyone knows the three-point line was just put in so white people can play basketball.

When I saw the rioters in Pakhistan trashing Starbucks and KFC, I saw so many anti-captalist, anti-American, poorly groomed jack-asses, I figured Howard Dean was back out campaigning and wanted to run for President again.

Bryant Gumbel's remark is racist and demeaning. Sports that dont require a ball are just as challenging and entaining as those that do.

I think it's a wonderful thing whan a serious affliction is cured. Consider: President Clinton's cabinet and staff were almost entirely caucasion. Apparently Mr. Gumbel had a color blindness problem back then. A terrible affliction.
Now, however, when his "team" didn't win the election and at this point really isn't in the game, (Constant whining and critisism is no substitute for leadership) Mr. Gumbel finds color in everything. A Miracle!
