I was hoping a few FReepers would sign up and perhaps put a "spoke in the wheel" of this proposed tax program.

The poor and minorities will be hardest hit. So there will likely be "a progressive mileage tax" where a poor person gets a lower rate. Once you've got your foot in the door with a progressive tax, the lobbyists can come in and start monkeying around with it too. The monkeying around can be very much "ear marked" because there is a little computer in everyone's car.

I think I will stick with the plain jane gas tax thank you.

Instead I recommend hanging the nearest public officals that suggest such a thing. And if they're stealing our funds to use on other projects, they should receive the same fate.

I looked at the house Transportation Committee the GOP has it by 7 seats. I looked at the senate side 4 RINO's on the senate committee including the chairman. The funding since it was federal would come either through them or from discretionary spending form U.S. Transportation Department.

the way to fight this,is to find out the politicans pushing it, and make them personally be
internet celebrities.

Let's see if the Democratic party thinks it is
fun to push something everyone hates.

We already do, it's in the tax on gasoline.

Answer me this. Why should I pay a road tax on my gasoline I purchase to mow my property?

The only thing they haven't figured out is how to tax the dead.

The gasoline tax is a de facto mileage tax, complete with credits for low-consumption vehicles. There is no need for further taxing schemes.

It seems Iowa want to get it's name on the "most liberal state" list.
The best thing that can happen to Iowa is if the universities closed and Vilesack was voted out of office

What, do they want to replace the gas tax, or just add this goofy idea on top of it?

And that's bad logic to boot. The car that gets 10 Mpg is going to wear on the road much more than the car with 100 Mpg.

It's counterproductive to the market driven need for more economical cars. I guess they want green technology AND liberal government mandates too. Can't have a free market can we!

Get 100 miles to the gallon? You would pay the same tax as someone getting 10 MPG.

Ah, you've spotted the dilemma!

Our "public servants" want "revenue stream enhancement" We are witnessing the cons setting up another "sting".

What if they don't have a car? Forget about a "lower rate"... they will qualify for Fuel Tax Credit based on the miles they didn't drive! H*ll, give 'em a car AND the fuel tax credit... even the fuel... insurance... /sarcasm

It has nothing to do with who uses the roads ,the govt collects less tax when people start to conserve .When these hybrid vehicles gain more popularity they will collect even less .Its the same old game the govt tells you to conserve to save then when you do they pick your pocket somewhere else
