San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom today proposed adding a $16.5 million supplement to the city's current budget in order to combat the rising homicide rate.
Standing in front of a San Francisco Public Library "bookmobile'' parked in front of the San Francisco Police Department training academy, Newsom earmarked $8.5 million for the Police Department and $8 million for civic programs.
"This is a parallel and balanced approach to violence and crime reduction,'' Newsom said.
Police Chief Heather Fong took the podium after the mayor, promising to move five classes of recruits through the academy in the next fiscal year. She called for the addition of 150 officers to the department's staff. The staffing increase would save the department money in overtime, Fong said, while increasing the effectiveness of its policing.
Fong also announced that the Police Department would use the supplement to hire a civilian information technology specialist to begin upgrading the department's computers and records technology, some of which is 30 years old.
The $8 million for civic programs would, according to the mayor, go toward the creation of 300 jobs for at-risk youth as well as vans to transport those workers. It would also designate a library bookmobile specifically for the Western Addition neighborhood, where many of last year's homicides occurred.
"This will be their library on wheels,'' said city Librarian Luis Herrera.
The bookmobile, Herrera said, would stay relevant to the youth it serves by including access to multimedia, homework help and career counseling.
Supervisor Fiona Ma said, "Young people will make the right decisions when given jobs and opportunities.''
The Board of Supervisors will consider the supplemental spending package before it can go into effect.
How much did this maroon spend on illegally promoting homosexual 'marriage'?
Midnight Grand-Theft-Auto San-Andreas matches.
Protection money?
What're are they gonna do ?Pay every covicted killer ten grand a year not to be convicted of murder
Oh wait..
I know, I know, we will buy a bookmobile, yeah, thats the ticket!
"Young people will make the right decisions when given jobs and opportunities.''
-dream on...
96 ? P'shaw.
We had that in the first month of 2006 in Detroit. (shhh' the Super Bowl Was a success)
How about passing legislation that criminals don't get out of jail?
Columnist Herb Caen used to say that the Western Addition should be subtracted. He was, of course, entirely wrong. All it ever needed was a cute little bookmobile.
Use the money to keep the killers in jail, and protect us all.
But he/she/it is fighting homocide.
The city needs to use the money to sponsor love-ins.
So, Heather's solution to homicides is a ... bookmobile?
I think they should try really strict gun laws.
Yup, that'll maker murderers think twice.
Sorry...all chocked up....laughing!!
"It would also designate a library bookmobile specifically for the Western Addition neighborhood, where many of last year's homicides occurred." HAHAHAHAH!
I bet it is up on clocks and stripped in a week!
(let the people have guns, not just the crooks)

Scumbag perp to best friend in the slums: "So, man, let's hit on someone." Best friend: "Naw, man, I'm gonna check out a book and sit under a tree all afternoon."
Yeah, right.
After reading about, and looking at images of these clowns (see below), I can only conclude that it is a politically correct pile of dung for a city. I wouldn't live in SF, vacation in SF, or even check out a book in SF. Who knows? The street tough in line at the book checkout might be mugging me a few moments later in the parking lot.

Police Chief Heather Fong ["I'm 5'1" and couldn't pass a man's physical to save my life but I sure scare away the bad guys with my ugly puss and I've added sensitivity training to the force"]
City Librarian Luis Herrera ["we have more books in Spanish than any other library in America"]
Supervisor Fiona Ma [ugh!]
You've inadvertently made a point here.
It's the idiots in the 1960s who used to believe in love-ins that created the city we have today.
Before the late 1960s, SF was a normal place to live. Now, I wouldn't move there if it was the last place on earth.
