Four More Alabama Churches Set on Fire
Associated Press ^ | Tuesday, February 07, 2006 | AP via Fox News

BOLIGEE, Ala. — Fires damaged or destroyed four more Baptist churches across the Alabama countryside Tuesday, less than a week after a string of five blazes that were ruled arson.

Church member Johnny Archibald said smoke was pouring from Morning Star Baptist in Boligee when he arrived around daybreak.

"They had kicked the door in," he said. "Evidently they had set the pulpit on fire and went out the front door."

Tuesday's fires took place at churches off rural roads, about 10 to 20 miles apart. They were in a cluster of three counties, about 60 miles from the Bibb County area where the five other churches were burned early Friday.

FBI acting assistant director Chip Burrus said investigators were working on the assumption that the nine fires are linked.

I didn't see an option to add to news for some reason. Can you fix it please?

Also www.tuscaloosanews.com has an update on the front page. They are now calling it "hate crime". Most of the churches burned the other day were mostly white congregations, tonight they are saying that most/all of these are churches having black congregations.

Dancy, Boligee, and Panola are TINY communities. There are congregations of denominations other than Baptist that this person would have seen but he's choosing to target Baptist ones.

He doesn't give me much confidence. They will get caught like the other recent high profile lawbreakers by good citizens or an alert cop on patrol.

What I MEANT to say is that a person choosing to target these Baptist churches would have seen buildings belonging to, say, Methodist Congregations, but is deliberately choosing to hit BAptist ones. I know that not 2 miles from the Baptist church in Panola there is a Methodist Church. There is also a Methodist church in Dancy, and I know there's an Episcopal church in Boligee.

There aren't that many rural churches in Alabama. You'd think they'd have installed security cameras or something, staked them out. These guys aren't going to stop until you catch them.

On Fox News tonight it was reported that ten years ago in these same counties there was a similar string of Baptist church arsons. Officials then were never able to find the person(s) responsible.

No, no, no. It's been explained to me that we apparently need the federal government to deal with this (even though it's a state issue and I assume the state of Alabama has laws against arson). Of course as you point out, it will be a local cop or someone calling into the local cops when this person is caught. I remember all the 'work' the FBI did up in our mountains in NC looking for Rudolph. Who caught him? A local cop just out and about.

I'm surprised the parishioners (i dunno what the Baptist terms are so forgive me ;) ) haven't formed a watch group yet. Have a couple of folks take turns keeping an eye on the church at night until this blows over. I would have thought this problem would have "fixed" itself already.

A quick search on the Southern Baptist Convention website shows 97 churches within 40 miles of Boligee, AL

On the contrary, there are lots of rural churches in this state. I live in a rural area, and within 15 minutes of where I live, I can think of at least 10 right of the bat. If I thought really hard I could probably think of at least five more.

Lots of them don't have the $$ for security systems, and many of the pastors of these churches serve more than 1 congregation, and have other jobs to make ends meet.

Hey cc! Hadn't seen you around. Hope your house is back in order. There was another thread on this earlier. Find it strange that it has not been in Breaking News here on FR.

Being here in AL, it is important you folks know these churches are not just places you happen upon driving down a country road. After the first set of fires it was thought to be a local because of that fact. That theory has now taken an eerie twist.

I am assuming that these churches are off the beaten path like the ones in Bibb County. Interesting also that this wasn't called a "hate crime" until this latest series. How much hateful can one be to burn the Lord's house? Regardless of its members. Of course, as I posted before, we don't need a building to worship Christ. All this does in this region is create a revival.
