WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain unleashed an unusually biting and blunt broadside Monday against one of his Democratic colleagues, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, accusing the freshman senator of backtracking on a previous commitment to help develop a bipartisan proposal for lobbying and ethics reform.
"I'm embarrassed to admit that after all these years in politics, I failed to interpret your previous assurances as typical rhetorical gloss routinely used in politics to make self-interested partisan posturing appear more noble," the Arizona Republican said in a letter to Obama.
"Please be assured I won't make the same mistake again."
McCain also told Obama that "I understand how important the opportunity to lead your party's efforts to exploit this issue must seem to a freshman senator, and I hold no hard feelings over your earlier disingenuousness."

Well, I am surprised and impressed ... good to see some 'spunk' in McCain! No doubt, trying to shake that RINO label of his. Go, boy, go!
"No doubt, trying to shake that RINO label of his" Only to slip back into it when ya least expect it!! He's as guilty of the same thing he accuses Obama of. A total RINO, not to be trusted.
If I didn't know better, I'd swear that John McCain was running for higher office or something....
Why, that's IMPOSSIBLE, I tell you. The good senator promised us Arizonans that he would fulfill his term if we returned him to the Senate.
The shock here is that McCain isn't criticizing a Republican. I guess this got coverage so the media can say "See, we cover him when he's attacking Dems, too!"
Mc Raisin Cain
Did John wake up?.....
Whatever you might say about McCain, this is a great smackdown. Ouch!
How transparent can Johnnie-boy get? He knows Obama might be a Veep candidate with Hillary - so he's trying to take him out early - while brushing up his credentials with the conservatives.
Nice try, Mc-Cain. But now that you've attempted to slay all the Able in the GOP - why don't you demonstrate your newfound loyalties to conservatives, and take that bloody knife out against Kennedy, Pelosi, Feinstein and Reid? You know they'll be trying to torpedo the good ship "Caine" come '08 - so go get'em, Queegles!
Imagine that, McCain dissing one of his own.
Exactly! McCain will try to get on the right side as quickly as possible....but he has shown in the past we can'ttrust this guy. Primaries will destroy McVain.
Apparently, this CNN reporter can't recall the 2000 election. McLame's hate-filled attacks are routinely biting and blunt. That's why he won't get my vote.
ROFLMAO
McCain connects with all kinds of moderate democrats and even liberals and those who dont care about politics.
Just go out and ask your liberal friends (if you have any).
The democrats continue to eat their own.
'From one Democrat to another...."
When will our guys learn that dems are just like muslims--if you are not one of them, it is OK to lie and decieve others. I believe that is written in the book of the prophet ted kennedy somewhere. :)
